Gotta go with the bag. Just bought one a couple weeks ago and I'm starting to forget what a pain the hinges were.

It also prevents my myriad of loose crap from beating up the fridge. But that's another prob to address... ;)

I would have to agree with the bag comments, I think it works as advertised. I have the bag and the 45 (from EE) and the whole unit is quite possibly the best "gear" we've ever purchased. My wife absolutely loves the thing and wants a 35 to keep in her car.

The 45 usually resides in the truck (always on around the "1" setting). When not in the truck, it stays up at the shed where we have no running water but we do have electricity. We're 20-30 minutes from the closest grocery store, so we've been known to throw it in the back of the Protege and make a town run. Allows my wife to make the grocery stop first, then on to the other errands without having to worry about the cold items.

Loaded full, on the "REF" setting in summertime temps around here, it will sit in the truck for 3 days without draining the Yellow Top all the way down.

On extended trips, we usually rachet strap the 45 with two 1650s in the back (D2), perfect fit. On the 88", I can get the 45 in against the second bulkhead and then squeeze 3 more 1650s in the back.

IMO, you just can't go wrong with the 45.

That lid falling off thing is the most bothersome bastard ever !!!

lol! I feel better now as I thought it was some retard thing I was doing to have the lid always falling off.

So, guess from reading this, a bag solves the problem?

Other than the lid, it is a great piece of gear. We have the 35 and it is fine although there are only 2 of us when camping.

ARB vs Engel
Other than price, is there any other advantage to the Engel?

dan,
i was told by the ARB rep. that color is the only difference between the two....they are the same units, Engel makes them both. he also said that the the price difference is due to the fact that ARB has a more established name (ie people are more familiar w/ the ARB brand )

Will the slide locks work on the ARB? Does ARB have slide locks?

Same here. ARB with ARB cover and engle slide lock.

Bag helps with the lid problem, does not solve it.

But, the slide lock will not work with the 45 and the handles on in a DI. If you get the 45, you will probably want to keep the handles on. It makes it so much easier to carry. I wish i took a picture of my setup. I use the handles to secure it down with ratchet straps.

Take out the back seat and everything fits no worries. Handles and all and you can reach back there for a cooly at any time. :D

Took them out years ago and replaced with full length carpeted MDF. They have never made it back in.

I fixed that &%*$* lid for about $.04. This will solve all of your lid problems. Just use a self taping screw and you can remove it later if you want to take the lid off.

The 45l weigh about 50# empty.

You will not find much fluctuation in price. $650-$700 is going rate. There really are no "deals".

OK, This Engel is probably the coolest (pardon the pun) thing I have ever bought for the Pig. I used it last week for a cookout on my patio, where its sole duty was to keep 2 cases of Fat Tire Ale cold. Now it's in the back of the Pig for a camping trip. Sweeeeeeeeeet!

Man, you should warn a guy before posting pelican/engle porn like that... Damn, as much as I don't think that I need an Engle, I really, really, want one..
