The concept of ethanol is fine, but its execution leaves a lot to be desired.

agreed - the concept worked very well in Brasil where eth is made from sugar cane.

one still can not get away that gas mileage goes down.

the general rule in Brasil was use the cane if the price per gallon was about 30% less than gas as that was the break even point in mileage loss.

smelled good though.

I'm a card carrying republican and conservationist. Al Gore IS a world class assclown.

Wow both sides agree!!! There is hope for America!

I was going to say conservationist but I don't want to overtoot my own horn, since, you know, I have this gas-burning oil-leaking habit called Rovers!

If Al Gore really believed all that he claims, he'd be living in a yurt on a 100+acre property (under conservation easement) completely off the grid and self-sustained.

And there is always hope for America when normal, thinking, reasoning citizens get together!

When Al quits jetting all over the country emitting more pollution with his jet in one trip than I would in 5 centuries, I might start listening to what he says. Until then it's BS as far as I'm concerened.

That chart makes me want to puke........

Ah, come on now Blue, charts are worth a thousand words ..... :D

Nothing is perfect but it does show how close classic liberalism is to conservatism. That is if you define liberalism as (wikipedia)

stressing individual freedom, free markets, and limited government. This includes the importance of human rationality, individual property rights, natural rights, the protection of civil liberties, individual freedom from restraint, equality under the law, constitutional limitation of government, free markets, and a gold standard to place fiscal constraints on government

I think you would agree that today's Democrat Party is not liberal. Today's Democrat Party are on the Left while today's Republicans are on the Right.

Helps to frame the discussion in terms of where we have gone on the political continuum and why we are headed for political and economic meltdown as we approach the top from both the Left and the Right.

Ethanol was meant to replace MTBE, methyl tetrabutyl ether as an oxygenator in fuels. Trouble was, MTBE is a long-lasting pollutant/carcinogen easily transported by ground water. Guess who was the largest manufacturer of MTBE? The ADM Corp....

I loved all of the fear-mongering over MTBE in groundwater. The sky is falling, the sky is falling, there is MTBE in my groundwater.

Duh, what about that evil Benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene and xylene? If you have MTBE in your groundwater, YOU ALSO HAVE GASOLINE in your groundwater.

Don't replace the MTBE with something else, for the love of God, fix your leaking UST!!!

i buy my gas here.....http://www.countrymark.com/

says it is a blend. I buy here because it is American Oil.
I believe my D2 likes the taste better. I run premium.
I get better gas mileage from it (countrymark) than the shell V-power, or the BP Premium.

CountryMark (CM) refines gas for Shell in Mt Vernon, IN. Shell and CM swap gas gallon for gallon in NW Indiana/Ohio and SW Indiana (CM sells gas from Shell's refinery in Ohio & Shell sells gas from CM's refinery in SW Indiana). You should get the same mileage from Countrymark as you do from Shell.

There is an ethanol plant under construction on the east side of Mt. Vernon, IN (the company is in bankruptcy). Texas Gas Transmission built a gas transmission line (4" in think) to feed the plant. When it is all said and done the plant will be a gas to liquids plant. I'd bet we could drive as many miles on the methane that will be consumed in the plant as we will be able to from the ethanol.

MTBE, BTEX, TPH, and PAH are music to my ears.

With MTBE it was not a toxicity issue per se, it was that small amounts of MTBE would cause large amounts of groundwater to have a bad taste thus rendering it impotable.

Nothing a simple carbon cartridge wouldn't fix.

Personally, I'd rather they fix the leaking USTs than change oxygenates. If nothing else, it made for a good indicator compound to prove presence of leaking USTs.

But, then again, I'm all for fixing causes, not symptoms.
