Golf courses are bad for the environment

I have my golf course Summer Slug (as management called us) yellow hard hat on a shelf in my home office. That thing dates back to about ‘87. I carved witty sayings all over it and then you rub dirt on the scratched words and they magically appear. I’m quite proud of this personal accomplishment, done while cheating the man out of about $3.00 in pay and smoking a joint with my girlfriend in the woods adjacent to a fairway.

Yeah Blue I get it. I grew up in a house that was next to the 18th hole of a golf course.
When I was like 12 yrs old we would drive a nail into a golf ball and hide in the tree line near a place a good golfer could clear a hill and not see his ball from the tee. I would run out there and switch his ball with the one that had a nail in it.
Then we would get a dick that would come in our yard and start picking up golf balls. They would pick up like 5 balls, I would go out and say some smart ass kid stuff. He would always say " I'm looking for my ball" I would say" it wasn't any of those 5 you already picked up?"
Then one of my favorites was when I would see a ball come in the yard and grab it. Guy would always come and ask if we saw his ball. If he seemed cool enough I would always give it up, and a few more. But if he was a dick, I'd say titelist 5? Then tell him I didn't see it.
I hate golf now, but when I was in high school I could hit the ball a ton. We had golf class in P.E. we would hit balls on the practice football field. Teacher would always make sure I had a 9 iron or pitching wedge cause I could hit the locker room building with a 5 iron. The game became slip Stew a 5 iron and watch the teacher scream at me.
I just find it interesting that Golf is dying way faster than Land Rover is.

Golf paid for my college education. It’s a lifelong sport that many enjoy. Beats sitting on the couch all day watching tv or working on the Land Rover

As much as i understand that golf courses take up farming real estate in some places, that's not really an issue in Vermont as we have tons of room for farms.

I've played golf most of my life, but only really got into it a few years ago. Definitely a frustrating and rewarding game that's been one of the pinnacle sports during the covid shutdowns. Very few sports are able to be as socially distant as golf.

While the info about golf being an "old money, older generation dying sport" are true, this year has never been busier on the courses around me.

Golf is the best sport ever. You haven't lived until you've been to Augusta National, and I mean that in the truest sense. Every person on earth (like Golf or not) should have at least one chance to see that place. I did back in 2014.

That is one of the highlights of my short life is getting to go there. Not a blade of grass out of place! I went in 2011, and can’t wait to go again

If you guy like golf, by all means go play. I just wanted to point out that even with all the financial doom and gloom articles getting posted here to troll us. Not many Land Rover dealerships closing down. But golf courses on the other hand are closing down in large numbers.
Seems like there are just tons of articles out there on the demise of the game of golf. But they seem to really upset the Rover hater among us. So I'll stop posting them, maybe.

If golf was like Happy Gilmore I would watch it. Kind of like a cross between pro wrestling, golf, and miniature golf. Lots of violence and alchahol

Right? I mean basketball players would probably like to not be interrupted when taking a shot. The quarterback would like to not be rushed when passing the ball. Everyone could benefit from not being interrupted.

But golf? Please everyone be super duper quiet so I can concentrate...

Maybe we could mix in a little NASCAR and tear up the 18th green for a victory celebration. Like with a really fast golf cart. Or a modified Polaris razor. Modified to carry golf clubs and a keg

Golf is/was definitely hurting. Younger generation doesn't have the patience it requires. Plus it's really hard. Most younger people have no desire to try something they fail at, mostly spectacularly. That said we are busier than we've been since I've been here. Golf is one of the few things people can do right now just like the "old days" (pre covid).

I started working on a golf course at 20. The golf pro came to me one morning and said he fired the super, and it's all you now. I grew to love it. At 30 I became superintendent at a limited budget private club. At some point the management/membership "forgot" about me. The course was always ready, I hit budget, and when they did ask something of me I got it done. April to November seven days a week most of the time. The next two months would be spent in a deer stand, and the month of January in a duck blind. Then a couple of months just dicking around then back to work. All paid. Granted not what I could have made elsewhere but that's where having a wife that makes good money comes in handy.

Golf courses as a whole don’t make money, the club that provides the drinks and food makes the money. The golf course brings the people in. I worked in the industry for over 15 years before I left to do what I do now. Golf is rising, equipment is more affordable and everything is more readily available(at least around here). With this stupid virus, golf has boomed due to everything else closing and people need and want something to do.

That's the way it used to be, and will again someday, but not right now with all the restrictions in place. The restaurant at the course I'm at now went from doing 250-300+ settings for Sunday brunch to about $450 since reopening. If things don't turn around soon, and I'm not sure how they can, it's going to be a blood bath in the restaurant/bar industry.
