seeing as we're digressing from cheap to ANY tires i'd pit the mickey thompson mtzs against bfgs (having had mud and all terrains previously)
+quieter than mud terrains
= for traction,maybe a bit less aggressive
+as cheap as bfg's for 5 atleast in Australia the were.
+heaps more side traction for rutted sections
+wear is excellent,less than 2mm off tread in 12,000kms
just a suggestion.... take it or leave it,i'm not getting into a tire debate, cos i don't really care what you get.

make/model??

also would 285/75/16 fit on a 16x7 rims

285 is a little big for a 7 inch rim but it will fit. 8 inch would be much better.

Stick with a 265-75-16 as it's a great compromise size and it's easy to find and cheaper/more common/more options.

I'll say it again, if you want cheap good tires call Nebraska Tire Company 1-800-234-5242 they are excellent people to deal with. Last salesman I got was named Roger and he was SUPER helpful. That said if you can find something nice in your price range it is ALWAYS better to support a local mom & pop store if you can.:victory:

mine are mickey thompson mtz 265/75-16 on a 2000 td5 with 3"

x2 with 'roving beetle' bigger tires can cause probs unless you fork out for diffs,hd shafts and off set rims(debateble, but won't go into that right now) then instead of rubbing inside with radius arms you rub on the body. ie pro comps

Ausdisco hit the nail on the head. Plus a 285 will be harder to push down the road too if you do any highway driving.

I went with 255-85-16 but that size without a diff re-gear on the stock V8 will really be hard on the truck from a power/rpm standpoint. With my low revving diesel it is just right. That said that size also puts added stress on axles etc.

265 is the best for overall drivability and off road performance. The difference in clearance a 285 offers over a 265 is minimal but the weight and stress added to components while not HUGE is worth thinking about.
