Importing a 110.

So, I think I've decided to start working on importing a 110. I can bring in any that the date of manufacture is 15 years prior to say August. This probably means the 1994/95 model year (not sure how much the date of manufacture leads the model year).

I'm mostly interested in either a Country Wagon or a Wolf, in diesel for sure. What I'm not sure about is which diesel I should be looking at, my assumption is that I want a 300 TDI.

Any other things to watch for that I should be including in my notes to friends in Europe when they begin the search for me?

300Tdis will be too new, even for canada. Wolf's with 300Tdis have not been De-MODed yet so you cannot buy one.

I would look for a 1990-93 county (not country!) SW that is a 200Tdi and left hand drive.

Actually, the 300TDI was introduced in the 1994 model year according to Wikipedia. Is that incorrect? Those would have been manufactured in 1993 which is over the 15 year limit. Or will be very close, a few months extra wait wouldn't be a big deal.

Well, my main use for the 110 will be expedition with a SVO setup. I'm also going to be looking for a 90 for off-road. Haven't looked into what it takes to get 35's on one but I'm betting it's the same kind of swap to heavier members/axles/diffs and a crawler box/underdrive/regearing that the Disco need. It's that or find a wrecked body/frame one and build an Ibex. Haven't decided on that one yet.

Anyone have a transatlantic vehicle transporter they've dealt with and had good luck with?

Cool, waiting on a quote from them. I know Transport Canada is thinking about harmonizing the rules with the US for importation, so somewhat pressed to get things in even if I don't start using/working on them for awhile.

Wallenius lines...good choice. They have bi-weekly sailings from Wilhelmshaven to Liverpool to Portsmouth, VA. Ro-Ro will be about a thousand dollars. You'll need a customs broker/shipping agent as well. Try the T. Parker Host Company.

I do business with Havas Packing and Shipping from the UK and they get it on WW as ro-ro for me. I take care of customs myself and pick it up in Halifax. It is pretty straight forward.

I would not buy anything younger than a 1993 because customs usually don't mess so much with dates of fab. and all that. If it does not fit the rules you either ship it back or have it destroyed and you get the bill !

Good luck ! And by the way keep all scraps of paper you can with all the transaction notices and notes. A good paper trail is the way to go if you ever have to sell it or just get it insured.

Well, it's Date of Manufacture that's relevant which I'll be sure to get on all the paperwork and have pictures of the door panel etc. Getting the 300TDI is on the list of important features though, so even if I end up waiting a little longer that's fine too. It could happily sit in a container in a warehouse in Halifax for any amount of time before needing to go through customs anyway afaik as long as I'm happy to pay for storage there. The real trick is going to be finding the ones I want I suspect.

And they will be very happy for you to pay for storage there ... at the price they are charging for a container per day you would be better off buying an NAS 110 out of Copley Motor Cars.

Good Luck !

You are pressed for time on this harmonization issue. I had the 300tdi put into my 110 after it was here, which is an expensive, but I would have happily gone with the 200tdi. Lower your standards ever so slightly and go for the 200tdi. I doubt you'd notice the difference. They both shake rattle and roll, but just don't smell and smoke as bad as the older varients.

I've got someone checking on exactly how pressed for time it is. Hopefully it'll be debated endlessly before anything gets done. If I end up needing to do it that way I'd probably just buy an old D90 import it, swap everything onto an Ibex chassis and put in whatever engine I decide on. :) My main requirements is must be able to run on non-petrochemical fuel, and must be able to be submerged and be reliable.

There is no reason to get a 300TDI instead of a 200TDI. They are both basically the same as far as power goes.

Except most of the heads, upgraded intercoolers, and other kits seem to specify 300TDI or TD5 these days. I don't see why not if I can, and can find one. Looks like I might actually be looking for 2 or 3 though, hopefully the expedition plans pan out. :)
