I've got an ARB bumper with the corner bent and scratched up. I don't think that a body shop would be able to pull it out and straighten it and re powder coat it. To replace it, though, is probably half of what the truck is worth. Add in the winch that isn't spooling out and it's even more...

I had this talk with my dad a long time ago. The insurance co is supposed to return your vehicle to you in the same shape it was before the accident. If it's more to fix than KBB says it's worth, you get a check for less than that until you argue with them.

Way back an old guy switched lanes and took the front bumper off of Shannon's Syclone. His insurance (Progressive, if I remember correctly) told her they'd only put on a standard s15 bumper without the spoiler and lights. We had to fight to show them it was a factory bumper assembly. My dad, an insurance investigator, gave us some information which we turned over to Progressive and suddenly they wanted to replace all the parts with factory GM/ASC parts. :D

It depends. Will the claim be paid by your insurance company, or the other party's? If it's yours, you have more to argue, however, they may require receipts. They may also replace it, but discount its value for betterment-ie, that the replacement is better than the one that was there.

Don't say anything about the winch.

Your best bet is to request that they attempt to repair the bumper and replace the winch that worked fine before whatever happened.

You may well be surprised at what a body shop can do with a frame table and hydraulics, I've seen some talented guys do beautiful work on heavy frames.

It's my insurance company. My first thought was to keep the bill as low as possible, but since the Kia that was in front of me is going to need some work to remove the license plate from the back seat, I'm not sure if it matters from a premium increase standpoint.

I had an RTE with a winch on the front of my '03 when I hit a dude head on that was crossing the intersection of a busy street. He missed the stop sign and swung out in front of 2 lanes of oncoming traffic.
The insurance would not cover the full cost of the bumper citing that it was a user-preffered accessory that was not factory. They would only offer the amount of the factory replacement bumper. Sadly, they wanted to cite a used price as the Rover was totalled (frame damage).
The winch was involved in the accident as well and they only wanted to offer $100 since I bought it used and didn't have a receipt to prove purchase. I said "fuck it" and removed it along with the sliders, Qt's, tires/wheels, and skid plate from the RTE prior to them rolling off the lot with it.

I just had this discussion with my American Family Ins agent. He said they have "customization" converage that can be added but when I asked specifics he couldn't answer. Apparently he had never had anyone take the coverage and had no idea what he was talking about. He said something like they would replace it but at a depreciated value. Well what the fuck good does that do me when I need to replace my front bumper??
I think there's a guy on(GASP!!!) ExPo that specializes in insuring off road/expedition vehicles and insuring vehicles in Mexico where most other companies won't.

my first question I ask regarding insurance is whether they offer gap insurance to cover the vehicle in the event that $$ is still owed on the vehicle and if it is totalled to cover the delta between the vehicle value versus what's owed
the love of depreciating vehicles :)

I think worst case they owe you the cost of a new factory bumper, which should be enough to buy another arb if you want.

Correct me if I am wrong, but GAP coverage/insurance is usually offered through a financial institution that provides a loan on the vehicle. It as mentioned earlier, provides a guarantee that the outstanding loan amount is paid, regardless of the current value of the vehicle (which may be totalled). There is still some "iffiness" with those policies. I have never personally heard of an insurance company offering GAP coverage. I have had several GAP insurance policies on vehicles in the past, to include the current one. As all or most of us know, that amount varies, although for vehicles I have owned it was usually around $300-500 (one time fee). This was done when the loan was originated; not sure if it is available post loan origination. I do know some insurance companies do offer after-market parts coverage, although that has to be looked into/originated prior to the accident of course.

Gap insurance is offered by insurance agencies too. Banks, dealerships, and insurance companies have offered me gap in the past and it seems that the insurance gap policies were cheaper than the other two. I paid 600 for the RR from my bank and something like 5 dollars a month for the mini from my insurance. Over a 5 year note the mini's gap insurance is $300. Either is cheaper than dealer gap.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

I bent my bumper, bent valance with fog lights, scratched fender, bashed out side view mirror.

repair = $2900

I got the fender and side view repaired, bought a brand new RTE w/ skid plate and brush guard, and pocketed $800.

Just let the insurance company cut you a check and buy a new/used ARB.

Allstate sucked pretty bad when I had them...

they are treating me pretty well, but my family has had the same agent for like 20+ years. I just filed the first big claim (uninsured motorist) with them, so we'll see what happens.
