Is there an easier way?

I'll be changing my transmission fluid/filter out this weekend for the first time and I've read it takes up to 7 hours to do. Is there an easier way than what the rave CD shows or some shortcuts that will cut this time drastically?

7 hours?? to remove like 7 screws and replace a filter?

I'd say 1.5 to 2 hours max...

you need two people when filling and a oil pumping device to get the oil back in..

the 2nd person is required to shift P-N-D-3-2-1 while you're filling...

you won't be able to drop the tranny pan all the way down to replace the filter without pulling the cross brace that connect to the frame.
I've tried it before and didn't work so I just drained and replaced the fluid instead.

pm me if you want some help, I'll be home sunday.

I think he is asking about the D1 job. It's going to take you every bit of 7 hours to get the Y pipe down, then cross member, then undo the pan, change the filter, put all the stuff back, and fill it. It is a fucking pain if you're on your back and not on a lift. If you have a DII, then its a few screws, change filter, fill fluid from the bottom (stupid) and yer done.

you don't have to pull the cross member all the way out just rotate it out of the way. get new y pipe gaskets & a couple new studs & [all new nuts] cuz you will break one or so.[unless you have MAD skeiiils] if you break a stud its not the end of the world.

I don't think it took me 7 hours, but I had the disco on a lift. I would bet that it would take up to 7 hours without a lift. I had to use a bottle jack to release the pressure between the frame rails in order to remove the cross-member. I don't think I had to remove the Y-pipe though, maybe?

7 hours is a bit of a stretch I have done the trans in 8 on my back in a D1

but peter is correct...have the y pipe hardware ahead of time and the ypipe has to come down to drop the pan. the factory bottle jack isnt the best tool for the job because they dont like to work well on thier sides. I have a mechanical scizzors jack that makes short work of the crossmember.
