Lucky 8?s Project P38

Here's a quick update with good news. We received the sliders and like a kid on Christmas I couldn't wait to rip open the box.

So far Im very happy with the build construction, powder coating and the way they mount directly to the frame. As you can see in this picture they fit the truck nicely.

We installed the passenger side and everything went quite well. We are saving the drivers side for the install video.

Things are moving forward with the locking Tcase too. Hopefully I'll have an update on that before the end of year.

I hate to say it. You bought a P38. Not one owner is going to rip everything out to make it a D1. P38's are never going to be a hardcore wheeler.

If you wanted simplicity, you picked wrong.:smilelol:

I have one, I love it. I wheel it, it has not left me stranded yet. Throw away the air suspension, navigation, and stock stereo system. I've wheeled mine all through Wyoming, Montana and through Moab (Golden Spike, Gold Bar, Poison Spider). I love the truck, its comfortable, eats loads of gas, had loads of torque, and the traction control works wonders. Places I should have been stuck, with a large amount and skinny pedal has gotten me out. I've only had to use my winch once in 2.5 years.

live with what you have, you'll waste too much money and never get a return out of trying to invest design into a p38. parts are expensive as hell. Now that Atlantic Pacific bought out British Pacific be prepared to pay out the arse for everything unless you can get it out of England.

not many people modify a P38 for offroad use. I can think of a handful including myself.

This thread would suck if he just mildly built a P38. His point is you can build a P38 to keep up with true wheelers. He's also in the business of selling these parts.. Plus he should be up and running on oem parts in January which if the past is any indicator the prices will be the best..

Why not have a unique build that kicks ass? Point is Justin is using this build to encourage others and help get more aftermarket companies making p38 parts..

look man, I'm not trying to knock his build. i could care less about his business. There isn't a market, never will be. plain and simple. I had a business building and selling jeep parts, which has 1 million times more potential buyers.

there is one guy who builds custom bumpers (they are ugly as sin) and i've only seen a handful of people bother to buy them.

I love my vehicle. it has issues. its only on 31" tires and OME springs. I'm going to go up to 32" tires if I ever get my BFG AT's to wear out. 30K miles on them so far. I've never had more then a 33" tall tire and never will.

These are never going to be a hardcore rig. to many electronics, to many computers. no one has enough computer programming skills to crack the BECM.

More power to you. But this will cost more then the truck will ever be worth. These trucks are getting harder and harder to find. When they die they go to the wrecking yard because people think they are to expensive to fix and too hard to repair.

I'll wheel mine until it all the electronics die, then its off to the scrap yard for a Land Cruiser. :smilelol:

Jake dont even bother with this Clown, he is but hurt because I told him his springs are in backwards over on Expo in his how to build a p38 thread.

I couldnt figure out why he was hating so much for no reason, and on the same type of vehicle he owns no less.. I think building a P38 is fun because of the challenge.. but I guess for some people installing springs the right way is challenge enough

The bcm has already been taken care of.

it may eliminate the cargo space, but at least the P38 is now reliable.

is that why we are sending an astronaut to space for a year? to help justin solve his p38 BCM issues?

I guess the boys a Black box dont know what they are doing.

And according to your logic no one will ever wheel the new stuff because of the computer. I will tell all of our LR3 people they are not aloud to have any parts.

if i could figure out how to fit salisburys under my ipad i would wheel the shit out of it.

the 2013 range is all computers. but it's designed to be wheeled, and wade. GL4x4, you probably plan on driving Jeep Willys for the rest of your life, that's fine. but i would much rather be wrapped in the warmth of my mullholland heated leather seats listening to the finest sounds of the radio on my 27 speaker sound system while i crawl thru a rock garden with ease. which reminds me, Justin we need Lucky 8 Ascots.

Ed, anything other than some shallow mud holes an lr3 and newer would be boring. Ask Justin how long it took him to hot rod Tyler or Skyler's (whatever his old camera guys and is) LR3 up a wet grassy hill at MAR a couple years back, and of course like clock work something electrical broke on it at the top of the hill when Justin finally got it up there.
The newer independent suspension trucks are not capable off road other than light wheeling and 'over landing'. And you can post pictures and videos all you want, but until you find one that can keep up with me don't waste your time.

The only reason I like the idea of Justin spending money on a p38 is because it is live axles and not some gay ass sport utility version of a truck, it's actually a truck.

no nearly stock lr3 or lr4 or range rover autobiography edition is going to keep up with your crazy ass as you roll thru the KOH course at rausch. they were never designed or engineered to do that and to make them capable enough to keep up with you would cost as much as the truck is worth. and we both know there are a gazillion factors one being driver skill. im not saying electronics won't fail, especially british ones, but it's the way that the future of the brand (and every other brand) is going. If no one is willing to embrace it and figure how to make the trucks capable enough to do what we like to do (without going broke) then we will all be driving 30 year old trucks in 2025.

I own a P38. that makes a lot of sense.

I've been talking to my electronics guy at work looking for a good way to put coatings on all the modules on these computers. he designs logic boards and controls for the oil industry. the only problem is the BECM. We are afraid it will over heat it. he doesn't know of any coatings off hand we could use that would be cost effective. I don't cross very many rivers or streams that are deeper then my doors, but it is still a worry.

A snorkle would be great. I've sucked in a lot of mud and water into my filter housing. The intake is in a really dumb location. Luckily the paper filters have kept the water and mud from going into my engine.

overall i'm happy with the truck. it has a few gremlins, cooling system and heaters are always wanting attention. so far i've replaced all the hoses, radiator and o-rings. I just noticed my o-rings are leaking again.:banghead:

I'd take an LR3 or LR4 anyday. The LR3's are nice, but i really prefer live axles over IFS/IRS. I think the LR3 is probably much better electronically then a P38.

The P38 was well ahead of its time. IT was very complex.

Do a bit of research on Blackbox Solutions on rangerovers.net. they don't have a great rep. I don't know that I would plunk down $1000 for a company that is not stateside. A lot of people have been having issues with customer service and support.

If someone can figure out how to get rid of Heater control unit and blend motors, without making the inside look like a butchered up piece of crap, i'd be all over that. I think you're stuck with the BECM. It does to much, controls too much, and would be really hard to move anywhere (TOO BIG). Now, if you could get the whole truck to run off an iPad that would be cool. Talk about a sweet security system too. Unplug it and take it with you.

The only thing I'd like to do is throw some larger tires on it, add a cam, gearing, ARB lockers, roof rack, and a non-plastic radiator

I'll give you props though for spending a ton of money on it. i like the wheels. they look a lot better then the Pro-Comp steel wheels I have. I should save some pennies for some of those.

I've had a great experience with Blackbox Solutions as have many others on this board. Being stateside should have nothing to do with it either, especially considering we don't even get Land Rover's full product lineup (that Blackbox Solutions cover) here.
