Kyle- why don't you post a poll about how many people carry weapons in their vehicles? In VA it's probably 7%-8%. Of 'outdoors' type people it's probably double that.
I carried perfectly legally, and anytime I carry it is within the limits of the law with all appropriate certifications and credentials. At times I could be required to carry or at least be prepared to. Unlike the vast majority, I know exactly how and why. I don't feel I owe explanations to anyone, although if you talk to me in person I will discuss it. Those who have done so seem perfectly satisfied.
As said a million times before, MAR volunteers have never been/will not be asked to carry any kind of weapon. Nobody has ever been 'drawn on' or even had a minor altercation with me at last year's event. The Sheriff's department will have some presense at the site at times- next year we will probably hire on additional support.
As with most events in VA, weapon posession by the public is not additionally infringed by the event organizers- nor should it be, in my opinion. What would be the reason? We don't have the manpower to enforce that type of mandate. There are reasonable laws on the books in VA and they are enforced by the local constabulatory.
Any harassment of any MAR staff, other attendees or other behaviour that is disruptive to the event will result in that person or persons being asked to leave. This includes drunk driving, destruction of property, etc.
Having seen the way people twist and manipulate the truth, there's really no reason to keep on with this thread. Thanks to the many people who sent supportive email... which far outweighs the number negative comments here.
Go to MAR, have a good time. I'll be the sober one with the first aid gear and extra trail maps if you need it.
It was fun, but now it's just a tired thread.
