LOL!!

I was thinking the exact same thing, Kyle. As staff to the Jax EOC, I'd better not leave the laptop unattended, because I sure wouldn't be able to, say, swing by the house and pick it up on my way in to the EOC for Tropical Storm Jeanne (yup, there be another one) Nope, better pack all the shit I'd ever need for a gig at the EOC in my truck when I go to the beach for the day. Or the mall, better pack a laptop for the trip to buy socks.

"Obviously you are one of the spouters of blah blah without reading what anyone else says. There are conditions unrelated to MAR that sometimes require me to have all my equipment with me so that I may return to work. That's all you need to know."

Oh, I read it all right. I might even comprehend some of the smaller words. But I don't buy it. Camping with you Rover buddies aint keeping you from matters of National Security.

Call it an example of Achems Razor...you need the gun to feel complete.

What if you were carrying in the city when your son spilled soda on your jacket, would you just carry your weapon openly there?

well?

will anyone mind if i wear this around, i might have to leap into action

yes, I would... I have carried openly before many times. like I said, it's never been a problem to anyone but the people looking for a forum pile-on. I just clip my appropriate ID to my belt in those cases... it's fun to see all the trolls having a good time.

Steve , exactly why do you really want to label this a "Forum Pile on" instead of what it actually is ? Had I see you in person I would have said exactly the same thing , although , I probably wouldnt be any where near as nice about it (Some say I come off a little abrasive) yes this is a forum and yes people are throwing in there two cents (ok for some its a half cent) and they are doing it over a genuine concern that is held about a open event. I realise that labeling it a "Forum pile on" is an attempt to make it less then real or in some way not legitimate for you , but , these are the people that attend Steve. Their opinions are what make your event. Without them you dont have an event. Yes this is only a small slice of the attendees. Many more read and dont post. I asked earier what someone thought the general concensus would be if you polled the whole group and I actually think this is nice in comparison to what you would get from that.
What would you call it if they said it in person ? Persecution ???

Please, everyone at MAR bring a gun and everyone start shooting at each other until everyone is dead so that next year can be MAR-free. Thank you.

Kyle- why don't you post a poll about how many people carry weapons in their vehicles? In VA it's probably 7%-8%. Of 'outdoors' type people it's probably double that.
I carried perfectly legally, and anytime I carry it is within the limits of the law with all appropriate certifications and credentials. At times I could be required to carry or at least be prepared to. Unlike the vast majority, I know exactly how and why. I don't feel I owe explanations to anyone, although if you talk to me in person I will discuss it. Those who have done so seem perfectly satisfied.
As said a million times before, MAR volunteers have never been/will not be asked to carry any kind of weapon. Nobody has ever been 'drawn on' or even had a minor altercation with me at last year's event. The Sheriff's department will have some presense at the site at times- next year we will probably hire on additional support.
As with most events in VA, weapon posession by the public is not additionally infringed by the event organizers- nor should it be, in my opinion. What would be the reason? We don't have the manpower to enforce that type of mandate. There are reasonable laws on the books in VA and they are enforced by the local constabulatory.
Any harassment of any MAR staff, other attendees or other behaviour that is disruptive to the event will result in that person or persons being asked to leave. This includes drunk driving, destruction of property, etc.
Having seen the way people twist and manipulate the truth, there's really no reason to keep on with this thread. Thanks to the many people who sent supportive email... which far outweighs the number negative comments here.
Go to MAR, have a good time. I'll be the sober one with the first aid gear and extra trail maps if you need it.
It was fun, but now it's just a tired thread.

I think the point has been made and like always. We will soon see after the MAR is over. I certainly expect you to say the thread was pointless but we both know it served a purpose and I think it will make a difference. As always , all the goins on at the MAR will pop up here afterwards... The good , the bad and the ugly..

Perfect, but only before I get there, so the trails will be wide open and devoid of whiners. Find something new to bithc about, join us at MAR or not. Get on with your life. I was there, Steve was helpful, nothing is perfect MOVE ON...

Come on people! The VP is from Tennessee for crying out loud! Plus he served in the military which means he's probably carried and fired a gun more than most of us combined!

Easy now James, most of us native Tennessean's take offense at that comment! Gore's family owned land in TN (his father was from TN). The former VP is from DC, where he was born and raised. Gore was a photographer in the Army. The only thing he shot outside of basic was a 35mm camera. Tennessean's are proud that he didn't carry our state!! :)

Disclaimer: I'm just being sarcastic here, so no one get their britches in a wad

Beware the mixture of puppies and firearms. If you're an asshole you may well be in trouble.

On a lighter note, anyone seen the Richmond Chicks lately? :p

karen and Blue have arrived...now this feels more like kyles living room

SYOUNG....that last post boardered on sanity :) I gather you are pretty rational and I am sure you are doing your best to make MAR a success. Just take all that has been said as public opinion and act acordingly....that is what you will expect of the other attendees I would guess.

If a Dillwyn firefighter was attending the rally and brought his turnout gear, would that be weird? When I as a firefighter in Northern VA I kept my turnout gear in my rover, always. Even when I went to buy socks.
In the past I was on call for support the night I drove up to MAR, so of course once I got to MAR I had my laptop.
The two above examples are "tools of the trade". For some people a gun is a tool of the trade. Sometimes one needs to be able to respond to their job requirements without first returning home.

Mr. Young..

I've been out on vacation last week so I'm just now reading this rather long thread. Well some of it anyways.. Being that I was at MAR last year and if you can remember I was one of the folks that was standing around the White Defender that went off the bridge to the island and got dunked. I was one of the folks trying to help and watch while some friends where trying to get it running again.

Now having said that I went to look at your freelander since it had sooo much stuff on it and yes I did see your handgun tucked in your drivers side door. You were not in the car and you were not paying attention either.. I could have easily reached into your open window and took it. You would be out a gun and have no clue where it went..

I'm all for guns. I have quite a few myself, however, I make it a point to keep it out of site when I'm carrying. There are many reasons to keep your gun out of view which being an ex-officer I'm sure that you understand. Well I hope that you do.. But, the one fact is that you did leave it out and it could have been mine if I wanted it.

As for the whole MAR and guns thing I really don't care. If folks want to bring guns then that's their right unless the land owner says not to. If that bothers people then don't go to MAR it's as easy as that. I think that MAR has gotten too crowded as it is so I won't be going back anytime soon.

I, for one, think that a nice outing would be an offroad hunting/fishing trip but, that's just my gun loving self talking.

Alright, everyone back to bitching at each other.

Oh, and I almost forgot.. I can't tell you how happy I am that the weapons ban hasn't been renewd yet and now the house is trying to do away with DC's gun ban.. Finally DCs crime rate will go down and be a safer place to visit.
