guys ...LOL there is no shortage of where to drive up there....its pretty much endless

The trails may be endless, but how do we organize who goes where? Some kind of maps would be good.

Another question......is this very impromptu, or are we inviting vendors?

Those are motorcycle/ATV trails, some of which are vehicle-friendly, most of which are not.

The "trails" PT was talking about are basically roads that are (1) unpaved and (2) unmaintained. At best they (in my experience up there) are like dirt roads or two-tracks -- at worst they are damn near impassable.

PT's suggestion to get a Michigan atlas is well-put. Seriously, look at the UP, and see how many "roads" are no different than the Jeep trails described in Colorado or Utah. Follow M35 north from Escanaba-Gladstone, and also look for Forest Highway 13 (14?), which runs north from US2 from Nahma Junction. There are a shitload of trails running off of each of these, most of which are between cool and insane.

EDIT: I just realized what "Lakes area" was, Matt. Have you been up there from the Detroit area?

Awsomeness! great find mwatters!
Lets choose a trail closer to Wisconsin rather than the tip because its closer.. and Wisconsin rulez!:rulez:

Ahhhh, the young.:p

Wisconsin: High taxes, few wheeling areas in public lands, no concealed carry. Not sure about whether it rules or not.

Closer for you maybe - but if I am going to roadtrip for trails I would rather there be a more open area so if there is a decent turn out - then as PT stated there will be plenty of room!!:D

No, I have not been up to the UP yet. Just got my toy a few weeks ago. I look forward to finding some fun.

You guys are cracking me up!

I go up there several times a year, try to invite folks every time (I have ten acres of semi-primitive camping) and so far, very few folks have taken me up on the offers and now, everybody from all over the country (or so it seems) is hot to wheel the Yooper country!

LOL!!!!!!!

As for maps and routes, look for forest service roads. Some of them haven't been driven in many years. our using the roads is beneficial for fire suppression, access, and wildlife. As we are driving on platted county roads, there is no risk of being run off or worse. I've been told the county highway departments really appreciate it as they don't have the $ to maintain these paths. Also, keep in mind that with the severe winter weather, the trails are NEVEr the same year-to-year. In the thirty plus years I've been going up there, I have only seen ONE road improved and that was solely so the paper company oculd maintain access for their arborists who often drive two-wheel rive vehicles.

Trust me, it will be a good time. Oh Yeah, Gladstone to Copper Harbor is fun, but Rapid River to Copper Harbor is better!

Peace,
PT

Since I am new to the whole thing and ready to play, let me know when the next time you go up there and I will be in. I am in the area and it is a sin that I have never wheeled up there. Just passed through to go to Isle Royale

DooD! I'm traveling and will be back in Kansas until further notice. I'll be home for Thanskgiving and then back here until I get some projects done.

I'm afraid I'm in over my head here.

I think things will die down a bit about this until after the holidays. The spring will get everyone really interested and motivated.:xmas2:
