Need help in diagnosing why my engine is cutting out

Alright. I've finally got some parts in and had a chance to try a few things out. However the condition has gotten worse. The truck won't start at this point :( I have gotten it to start a few times but I haven't gone more than 5 feet without it cutting out on me again. I haven't dared to take it further yet.

I replaced the VSS, but since the truck isn't starting I don't think this was the culprit.

The engine is turning over just fine and when I pulled the plugs to replace them about 1/2 of them were soaked with fuel. So fuel delivery doesn't look like a problem. (Although at this point my engine is probably a bit flooded...) All of the plugs where failrly well covered with the black soot but the others were otherwise dry.

This leads me to either the coil and amp (as mentioned before) or the cap\rotor as the culprits. I had replaced the plugs\cap\rotor\plugs this past spring. Although the cap\rotor wasn't genuine. With 1/2 of the plugs being soaked does this point towards the cap\rotor or the coil\amp?

Thanks,
Tim

No, it's def the coil and amp! I had exactly the same symptoms as have been described in this thread since the OP started out, mine ended in the same manner too - except in a parking lot about 200 miles from home! It had started and run - hesitating and cutting out somewhat, until it finally and terminally died.

When My 1995 RRC 3.9 did thismany years ago, it turned out to be the fuel pump relays (there are two of them) were ready to be replaced. These relays are in the right kick panel. They are made by Bosch. They have silver metal covers (not like the green and yellow ones).

I'm experiencing the exact same symptoms with my '04 DII. Anybody know if the problem is with a part common to the DI and DII?

Mine is intermittent right now - I can pull off, cut the truck off, crank it back up, and she'll run fine for another couple weeks until it happens again.

Any ideas for us DII guys?

It's been a little while since this thread was going, but I wanted to give some resolution to the issue. The 'other side' was correct. I replaced the coil and amp and the truck was running again.

The sad side of the story is that this made me realize that it was time for me to say goodbye to the Disco :( I had been keeping her alive for a good number of years now and always wanted to get a chance to tear it down to the frame to do a rebuild. I'm still a few years away from being able to do that (living in a condo now, so no garage space) and since the truck had spent the majority of it's time in northeast Ohio (so lots of salt in the winter) there wasn't much on the underside that wasn't just completely rust. Hopefully in a few years I'll be able to find a good starter truck (D90 maybe) and do my rebuild with that.
Now I've got a box full of spare parts that I never got around to putting on the truck that I should do something with.
