I'm in the market for a new truck in 2-3 years at the longest. If it's under $50k and I can get a diesel quad cab pickup sign me up. I am too, also hesitant about new tech, in any car. But I can't see myself toting around kids in a 20+ year old daily driver... even if it is as reliable as can be.

The DC100 (Defender Concept) pictured above received enough negative feedback when introduced that LR designers, in subsequent interviews published in the auto press, said that the production model was not going to look anything like it.

That particular concept doesn't work for me, but the DC 100 Sport was pretty cool. Hell, they have a Range Rover Sport, a Discovery Sport... Why not a Defender Sport?

I wouldn't mind having one of those. It looks like it would be a lot of fun on road trips and about perfect for parking on the beach; which is what they did as soon as they found a camera.

I have a good feeling about it. I think LR is going to pleasantly surprise us.

Is nothing sacred?

Why not? Keep the Defender replacement, and then offer this as a little "lifestyle" option, built on the Evoque's platform:

There's no way that wouldn't sell. Hell, I'd buy one to just cruise around in. It would make some sense out of the product line. Everything would then have a Sport model that's got shit-all to do with the real thing.

I hope so. We have my 110 I got when stationed in the UK, a GX470, and a totally beat 250k mile honda odyssey. I want to take the kids wheeling in the 110 but hate to think about trekking 2+ hours with them in it. I want a new vehicle that can actually do some offroad in especially being out here near some of the best trails. I want it to be good so I can con the wife back into the GX aND get myself one, but I have no confidence in LR/Gerry McGovern 's ability to make something that I'd actually buy.

I can't see how JLR would ever produce a new vehicle that pleases the Defender enthusiasts. When they stopped putting the V8 and low range in LR4s by default, they lost the last bit of legitimacy that they had in my mind. They are now the makers of a line of SUVs with decent off-pavement performance. I don't think they will ever make anything I like again.

It will be interesting to see how the new Ford Bronco will enter the market.

Some of the photos floating around show a 2-door version which could be based on the new Ranger p/u or the F150.

This was written in the Road and Track article I read - "And with the Jeep Wrangler dominating the two-door off-roader market, Ford definitely wants a piece of the action."

I think I've said it before but again - I'm wondering what percentage of Rover's customer A) Buys the vehicle for off-pavement use and B) If they DO buy it for off road use, how many of them actually use it off road. I have a feeling Rover has the answer to those questions and I have a feeling those answers don't support company investment in any new old school bad-ass Defender any time soon.

There's probably a halo effect from offering the Defender. It gives their other products off road credibility.

Who knows if they see it that way though.

I think that would be a very expensive halo for a luxury SUV maker.

With Jeep talking about pulling out a $150,000 Wagoneer... Anything could happen. The Bronco looks promising, but I'll wait to see the Defender before deciding on my next vehicle, now that it's been announced properly.

This is simple.
None of the "enthusiasts" buy new Land Rovers.
Therefore, Land Rover gives precisely zero fucks about the opinions or desires of "Land Rover Enthusiasts".
If you're a poseur cunt with lots of cash, you buy a Range Rover, so all your poseur cunt friends are impressed.
You have no concept of what "low range" is, unless it's that parking thing that lowers the car so your fat hoes can get in.
They'll emasculate the Defender because that's where the money is.
Pretty much what the did to the Disco.
And they'll continue to run ads as if they give a fuck about the Brand Heritage.

A question for y'all:

How much would you pay for a new, updated (meet safety, MPG requirements, etc.) Defender-style vehicle from LR? $25K? $50K?

I would pay $40kish after taxes and license fees. That's about what a 4Runner Trail costs you new. If they made it similar in capability I would be interested. But it wont be. Im going to guess there will be zero after market products like lifts and offroad accessories. Thats means you'll barely be able to stick a 33" tire on after you trick the suspension sensors into lifting the vehicle. Or it'll be a ghetto fabbed lift for the independent suspension. Not ideal.

A sticker of $36k would be ideal. $50k is way too much for a LRINO.

I'd pay $50,000, but I would like to see a base model at $40,000; near the upper end of Jeep territory.

I feel it should be presented as a lifestyle vehicle opposite the Evoque, and perhaps their cheapest model.

That said... They could indeed get that $50K out of me if it looks worth it, but the thing would have to serve many proper utility purposes, as well. At that price, it's not a toy. It should do stuff.

Cheers,

Kennith

I'm planning on buying a new Defender when they come out and expect to pay about $60K for it with the options I'd want.
I won't be surprised if it goes to $65K.

Impossible to answer without seeing what LR comes up with. There's a whole lot of space between the original Defender and, for example, the Disco Sport.

That's around where I would expect it to be.

If I were buying a new vehicle, I'd buy a diesel full size Range Rover. Right now they have awesome employee deals on them.
