New Fan clutch, junk out of the box?

I ordered a new Hayden fan clutch (part number 2991) from summit and just got it today. Installed it, and noticed that when I turn the truck off (after it is at operating temp) the fan will free wheel for a good 10 seconds. Am I mistaken, or is this is a bad fan clutch? Shouldn't the fan stop once the engine is killed when it is at operating temp?

Not sure mine does the same thing. My new has no wobble or play in it, my old one sounded like a jet engine and had a wobble when you grabbed the fan.

I was thinking about going the genuine route. Have you run both and had better experience with the genuine?

no.

never tried anything but Genuine on the trucks I have done them on besides mine...I figure the oe one lasted me 6 years, thats pretty good track record for me..

ask PT what he uses, maybe he has a cheaper alternative, I'm by no means an authority here, but can only share that dealer parts seem to work better in some places and this is one. same with thermostats so far in my book

the way fan clutches work have always been a mystery to me. sometimes they act one way other times they act another way. i only replace them if they're completely frozen, completely free, or wobble. and often times the aftermarket ones will feel just like the one i'm replacing. I feel better using old genuine ones than aftermarket ones.

I just replaced mine with this recommendation from a previous thread...

Parts needed From Autozone
Imperial Fan clutch 215157 ($66.96)
4 Bolts (Help! kit # 14040 10x1.5x15mm four pack) ($5.98)
10mm drill bit or reamer (had an old bit laying around, think I used a 3/8" bit)

Installation:
Remove your fan blade assembly from the old clutch
Ream out the 4 mounting holes on fan blade assembly to fit the 10mm bolts from the Help! kit
Bolt your fan blade assembly onto the new clutch with your Help! bolts
Reinstall onto your water pump and you are good to go

Although I replaced it already my truck is still not out of the garage yet but that part seams to be working fine and it was really quick and easy and cheap!
You can find that thread by searching Viscous Fan Clutch-Alternative Part

Guys

I am having a problem with my 01 Disco II and someone said that it may be the clutch fan. Once my truck is warm, no mater what gear I am in at 1800 - 2000 RPM it makes a whining noise and doesnt have as much power. The RPMS do not drop, but as soon as i push it past the 2000 RPM mark it is fine. I have already dropped it into low range and made sure that everything is working.

Any ideas? Is this the fan clutch?

Gem you don't have a choice with the '04 unless you wanted to downsize and go with the older fan.

A fan clutch "locks in" when the radiator is at 195/210 degrees. Fan clutches free wheel at normal engine operating loads and temps.....If you increase the engine load or restrict the air flow, the radiator increases in temp until the thermostat is open all the time. At that point the fan clutch will lock in,and increase air flow to cool the radiator, and the engine.... To put it another way, you need to stress or max out the cooling system to test a fan clutch
