Long time lurker here. I searched all over but could not find the same issues.

I recently inherited (free) a 96 Disco 1 with 173K on the clock. It had a FULLY grenaded transfer case, which I replaced one from a wrecker (not fun without a lift). After finally getting everything back together, I no longer have 3rd or 4th gear. First and second are solid, as is reverse.

When accelarating it will hold second until redline if I do not throttle more than 50%. As soon as I go WOT it will "slip" to redline and re-engage 2nd gear after the tach falls back to 3000 rpms, but never go into 3rd or 4th.

When it "slips" it feels as if you put in the clutch on an MT vehicle. No power to the wheels, but you can hear/see the engine revving up.

At first I thought it might be related to the VSS as the speedo was not working, but i rebuilt that and now have a speedo. No change. Only other issue with the vehicle is P0158 for Bank 2 Sensor 2 o2 sensor.

Last night I changed out the transmission filter and refilled with new ATF. No change

Thanks in advance for you help. Cant wait to hit the trails.

will do. When i installed the transfer case I had the whole console apart, so it may have been bumped or something.

Also when I dropped the pan I saw no evidence of metal. Tiny bit on the drain plug. Before the transfer case went the tranny was operating normally as per the previous owner.

Also, after replacing the transmission filter the Park position on the shifter no longer "holds". I can feel the vehicle shift out of Reverse, watch the tach change, but the vehicle will roll if the parking brake is not applied. It is possible that i bumped the reciever bracket for the shifter cable, or my transmission is hating life. Thoughts? Thanks again

Or you forgot to put fluid back in.

Or you need to Rev it up a couple times in gear (thats what I had to do last time I did a dry fill on a ZF4

T-Case is not in neutral as i have an annoying buzzing noise when it is.

I have driven it a few times for a total of around 10 miles, then refilled twice (Thank god she has a dipstick) Should be enough right? Thanks

Is it possible that I hooked up the transfer case shifter incorrectly, and now the vehicle is in low range? Would that stop it from shifting into third?

It indicates (and feels) normal on the t-case shifter assembly. Buzzes when in neutral, shows diff lock light when shifting to left side.

Also forgot to mention that i replaced the alternator with a used bosch unit from a wrecker (90 day warranty). I'm not sure if this could make a difference.

My hunch is when you changed out your tcase you may have caused some of the floating debris in the transmission fluid to clog up one of the passage ways for the transmission to shift into 3rd and 4th gear. That is what happened when my transmission went bad awhile back.

I would flush the tranny with SeaFoam. The valves get clogged. I had similar problem and that fixed it. Flushed twice per directions then re filled with redline fluid.

My Son got mad because his Camero would not shift out of 1st Gear... Sold car for less than 1/2 it's value. New owner told him it was The speed Sensor in the Rear End... the wire was broken... So check all the wires for shifting..

It is a Disco 1. Nothing electrical in the transmission.
