Any of you geeks got a Nook?

I know, I know...a few years ago I was one of the ones on here ranting that I would stick with paper books blah blah blah. But I admit that I am gadget whore and I could no longer restrain myself. So I am here to eat my words and see who else has a Nook Color, specifically.

In fact, I should probably log off now and resume reading The Devil Colony by James Rollins.

A few days ago I bought a dell streak 7 I have a few books on it. It also has gps navigation, mp3, video, bluetooth linked to the obdII system so I get real time data and can pull codes as they pop up. I'm a tech nerd :(

I thought about getting an ereader, but I have 20-10 eyesight, and reading 6 point font on the 300ppi display on my iPhone is actually comfortable for me, so I tend to either read paper or read on my phone. I know a lot of people with iPads who just love them, and I've loved them when I've used them, but not enough to shell out for it. Maybe eventually I'll get a device of that sort to keep on the bedside table, but in the meantime I have more important things to spend on.

Chris you should come over to the dark side, my streak was only $250 and in my opinion in a lot of ways it's vastly superior to macintrash

I have had no luck with Dell, nor has anyone I know... I will stick with my macintrash.

I've had the Kindle app on my iPhone for quite some time. It's ok at best to read on a iPhone.

I was given a Kindle recently. For an e-reader, it kicks ass. The non-backlit screen is perfect for reading. There is no glare when reading outside. That being said, it is just a reader. I'm not sure if the color Nook has a similar screen, but consider that when you buy one.

In my case, I do a lot of reading, so the Kindle fits my needs. I use my iPhone for email and other surfing. I really don't need an iPad.

I will say this about the Streak - I like the intermediately sized form-factor. I'd be happy with a bigger iPhone as long as I can still put it in my pocket.

There are definitely things I like about Android - but most of them are because those are the ways in which it is like iOS. What I don't like about Android products is first and foremost the interface, and that they tend to not be as well-designed or stable, and don't have nearly as many compatible accessories as iPhones because the handset market is so fragmented. For example, I can get several different cases that will protect my iPhone like you wouldn't believe, but the choices for other handsets are far more limited.

The end of the line for me is, they're not as pretty, they don't do anything I need that my iPhone can't do, and there aren't as many compatible peripherals. I'm not married to my iPhone - if there's a good reason for me to switch, I will - I just haven't seen one yet.

At some point I might need to buy an Android handset so I can test cross-platform game development tho, at which point I will be entertaining suggestions! ;)

That is the Dell 5, I'm talking about the Dell 7.

It's extremely stable so is my HTC Evo as well and the htc hero that came before it. User interface for me is extremely easy to use and change to suit your needs and desires.

Otterbox covers both of mine if I need the cases don't need to look further for good protection ;)

You would think jen would be an expert on this.

:p I'll never tell.

My GF got a Kindle last week and she indeed loves it. The light weight is great. I got a Nook a few weeks ago and I really like it too. Quite a bit heavier than the Kindle and not as good for reading outside in a lot of sun because it's not an e-ink screen, but I wanted to read at night without a light.

I was hoping someone had a Nook Color already and was experienced with the whole rooting thing and turning it into an Android tablet. So many new terminologies to learn and so much web information that it's confusing to figure out how to do it. Guess I'll just use it for reading for a while.

Here you go Jen, I've rooted a few devices so far, with my android EVO 4g phone and now my Dell Streak 7 it's pretty easy just research and cross check before you do it. Then once you are comfortable with the instructions follow them exactly. Also you can usually find a youtube video or 5 to watch walking you through rooting.

I'm installing honeycomb 3.2 on my streak tomorrow :D

Here's a link to some directions on rooting yours, like I said research is your friend and this is just one example.

I've got the Kindle app on my iPad and it's pretty nice to read. My sister has the old b/w Nook and really likes it because of the non-backlit screen. To each their own--I've heard lots of people say they prefer one or the other based on the screen.

I tried her Nook recently and it was ok. I've also got the Kindle app on my Android phone but have only used it a few times when travelling with nothing else. There are 4-5 women at work that have the Kindle and talk daily about books to read/share...a few of them have said they wish they had the Nook because there seem to be more offerings through BN than Amazon?

Even though I love all the new technology, I still prefer books.

Thanks Bill. I've read tons of stuff but it's all making my eyes cross. I'm contemplating just dropping the dough on getting the mSD card from Nook2Android and taking the easy way out.

Get the nook, then get a SD card, load full android onto card and it's now a full fledged tablet. If anything goes wrong, just pull out the card and it's totally factory.

Seriously it's about that easy, took my a few hours (some un-maned time plus I changed the boot menu) and it's amazing.

You're completely off topic. But I don't care, because I get to one-up you. I just bought a 27" iMac (yes, in Africa). Geez this thing is fast.

I got an e-vert today from buy.com that has refurbished color nooks for 169 with free s/h. Don't know if it a good deal or not since I never even seen or heard of a nook until this thread.

Shit, that is a good deal! I paid $250 for mine.

Bri - I'm considering getting the Nook2Android mSD card cause all the web info and youtube videos just confuse the crap outta me. The card runs CM7 on it and I think they now have it to where it will dual boot so no need to root or remove the card. Sounds like I cant lose with that deal and for $35 it's no bad considering I don't think I have the patience to spend a few hours downloading crap to get the card working. :(

I just found out that my work is considering using the Nook Color in the field for elevator installation instead of providing a huge 5" ring binder full of PDF's. I think it's a great idea...but I've seen the condition the binders are when they come back to me...not sure they would last long with our installers! lol
