Opinions on a good AR15?

I am looking to buy an AR15 in the next few weeks and I was looking for some input on what to look for. I was looking at the S&W M&P 15. Found a new one for $840 shipped online. Are these decent enough to taking to the range every month and for the coming zombie apocalypse?

no matter what people say they are all the same. I've shot many different brands and assembled them from scratch. My personel rifle has a DPMS lower, colt lower parts kit, DPMS bolt carrier, and FN bolt with a model 1 20 inch standard A3 upper. It shoots very well. I even loaned it to Chapman to slaughter ground hogs. I have a Colt for work and it also shoots very well, but you will pay for the name and I wouldn't say that it is any better than anything else i've ever shot. I don't think I would ever buy one off the shelf in the store. If you can just look for a stripped lower for less than $90 and shop around for a kit or buy what you need here and there and put it together. You can assemble an AR15 from loose parts in a couple hours.

My vote is build your own. Extremely easy to do; pick your parts right and you can assemble an accurate, very light-weight shooter.

So I have come across a Spikes mid length upper with a 9" quad rail and upgraded muzzle flash for $700 from someone local to me. He said he will do $1,000 for the upper and green Magpul lower with MOE stock, trigger guard, and grip. Does that sound decent or not a good deal? I see the Magpul is mentioned as shit by big papa. Is it really no good?

:banghead: See now you had to go and say something like "Quad Rail"

Christs sake you could buy a real (by that I mean accurate and useful)upper from Rock river Arms for example for less than that new.

Haha see, I don't know much about the AR-15's, this is why I'm asking! Now I know not to get that

Again, just buy a stripped lower cheap somewhere, and a rifle kit from Del-ton, JT, or Model 1, etc. You can assemble a solid shooter for $560-$700 out-the-door, and that can even include your first few boxes of ammo. I recommend a mid-length gas system for lower recoil, less hammering on the BCG, and slightly longer sight radius. Combine that with a heavy barrel, and you'll have the felt recoil of a .22LR.

Let me ask you this, What are you going to use it for? Shooting tin cans, woodchucks, or targets? Open sights or scope? The AR platform can be incredibly accurate. Even a plain old chrome lined barrel with a float tube can hold sub-MOA with good bullets.

Just want something to go to the local range with. Shoot hogs and squirrels at the ranch with. Not looking for super long range, maybe 100-200 yard range. I am on the del-ton website messing around. I have come up with this...

16 inch mid-length rifle kit
DTI 16" 1x9 mid length chrome lined heavy barrel
YHM 4 rail light weight free float tube
standard bolt and carrier
m4 buttstock
a2 grip
no carry handle
A2 flash hider
YHM 4 rail gas block
standard lower parts
standard charging handle
flat top upper with t-marks

(yes yes, I know, the 4 rails... But it would be nice to add a flash light to the underside for hogs at night)

So besides the 4 rails, how does that combo sound? And how complicated is it to put this all together? any speciality tools needed? This will be the first gun I have built myself.
