Ok guys and gals, what do you consider the best semi-auto tactical style 22LR? I am looking at the S&W 15-22, Ruger SR22, Colt M4 in 22LR, and anything similar.

No, just shot a S&W and my brother in law works for Ruger so he is looking into getting me a SR22. Looking to spend no more than $500.

M&P 15-22 is the one I settled on.

Found a dealer on XD Talk forums that sells them for $399, plus about $25 for shipping.

I can't decide whether to buy this, or replace the sights on my XD. We'll see...

i bought a 10/22 and put an ATI folding stock on it. not as flashy as the archangel , but still tacticool. btw nothwestshootersupply.com has a great buy on the archangel.
Also bought a couple compact 30rd mags, a grip , and a 3x9 scope (happened to have crosshair illumination too for whatever reason).
so all in all:
10/22: $189
ATI stock: $99
Scope: $25
4x Extended Mags: $100
Forehand Grip: $10

all under $500 and u dont need to have the "its not really an M4" conversation.

Just get a Ruger 10/22 for plinking and put the $200 you saved toward a more powerful tacticool rifle.

Roger, that. But there are more accessories for the 10-22 than anything else. It's already surprisingly accurate, but it can be made even better.

Please keep in mind that this is not really for me. I have some big guns already. This will be used to teach my 6 year old gun safety and how to shoot in general. I figure why not get him something cool instead of making him use my 30 year old bolt action 22. I can afford something cool, so why not.

Not to mention he has already shot the 15-22 and I told him I would buy him one. Just want to buy the right one. I do like how the Smith has a regular thick barrel, not paper thin like the Ruger, Colt, or others.

...because your 6-year old needs to learn about making his shots count. A single shot, bolt action is the way to go with him; not a semi-auto. You wouldn't teach him to drive in a Corvette, so why teach him bad habits right off the bat with a semi-auto? He needs to learn the basics, first. That also means no scope.

Teaching a young child gun safety is important. It's also important to protect yourself and others. Teaching him to keep the barrel pointed at the ground or down range, using the safety, etc.. are some of the first steps. It's a natural instinct for a child to shoot a shot and then turn to look at you for approval -- when that happens it could mean him pointing the barrel right at you, or sweeping others. You'll feel a lot safer knowing there was only one shot in that gun and not ten.

.22's are cheap. You can get a Cricket for like $150.00. That's an excellent trainer. Once he's older and a little more experienced and familiar with a rifle, then look at something else. But forget about the tacticool shit....you'll turn him into the Mall Ninja.

Yeah, I think a $500 budget for a 6 year old is kinda extreme too. Why not get him a $107 Mossberg 702 Plinkster from Wal-Mart, and some extra magazines and only load one round in each mag. Once you are sure he isnt going to turn around and point the thing in all the wrong directions then start putting all ten rounds in them. As far as quality, its a good gun, nice size for a kid (I look ridiculous shooting mine) and I have put a couple thousand rounds through mine with no real issues.

For all that is sacred, don't start him down the tacticool path. Get him something with wood on it. Real wood. Anything that has any sort of picatinny rail shouldn't even be considered.

Heavy barrel for a 6yr old? Good Lord!

my son ( now 11 ) started ( age 6 ) with a bolt action 795, with a clip ( yea screw you I say clip ) of 7 rounds, started with no glass, then glass to finally learn how to adjust the glass, the best training tool, now he shoots his .243 with no issues ( still a bolt action ).

But I have to admit, he plays with an M&P 15-22 well dressed, that is what he asked for when he brought all A 2 yrs in a row ( and on that path for year 3 ) , so, not a bad incentive in my eyes.

Now my opinion, the Umarex ( Colt M4.22 ) sucks, the GSG and Sig hard to glass up if you want co witnessing with BUIS, the Ruger 522 is ugly, and if you want inexpensive tacticool the new Mossberg at 219.00 is the winner.

i'd also say its best to start them out on a single shot but once their shooting buy them something neat.
my nephews favorite 22's are my polish wz-48 single shot mosin nagant training rifle & my gsg 5-pk, my gsg is the most useless gun i've ever owned but it is a blast to shoot.

i'd also suggest buying him some of the metal spinning targets, they keep my nephews busy for hours
