My bad, hard to keep up with all the hurricanes this year. You're right, it was Ivan.
I really, really, like your part of Fla.
Yeah, for a place to live that is pretty close to the tropics, the islands around Fort Myers Florida are hard to beat. Not many places to off road down here though, unless you have an amphibious vehicle. All of my off roading time now-a-days is spent in a boat.
Naples is one of the wealthiest, if not the wealthiest, cities in the US, as well as one of the most beautiful areas, however there are tons of people down here as the weather and lifestyle attracts the retirees. The islands down here that were covered with such lush and tropical foilage are all but bare. Nothing looks the same. It will be 5 to 10 years before the beauty of the area returns to what it was.
We are taking the boat up to Boca Grande this weekend via the intracoastal waterway just to see the damage from Charley and to see if the regular places we used to go are still there. For example, Cabbage Key has an inn and restaurant on it at which Jimmy Buffet supposedly wrote "Cheese burger in Paradise". The inside of the place has about $75,000 in one dollar bills taped and stapled to the walls from visitors spanning back over 30 or 40 years. Pretty amazing.
Just down the waterway was another place called Barnacle Phills which again has the same one dollar thing going on inside. Very laid back climate and atmosphere. Everything was covered with Palm trees, bright white sand and greenish blue water. Nothing like pulling up on Cayo Costa Island and sipping a few beers and eating some fresh food while you watch boats go by either heading out to fish, or trudging up the intracoastal waterway.
Sanibel Island is/was another amazing place. Covered with dense thick palms and 50 year old Australian Pines. It had a certain charm about it and Captiva Island which is attached to the north end of Sanibel Island. Captiva is and has been long rated the best beach in North America for Shelling and Sunsets, as well as being generally a romantic charming place. Most of that lushness is gone, as Charley stripped it off and broke and toppled those trees.
I'll get a first hand view of it this weekend as I've stayed clear since the hurricane passed by a few months ago. Maybe I'll get some pictures to share.
PS - to clarify the above - Naples, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers have all grown together into one sort of larger area. I live with the poor folks up in Fort Myers.
