Other than cost what are the advantages of this ignition? Of all the distributor threads I've read very few make me want to go out and buy one of these aftermarket jobs.

advantages are the double strike the ignitor provides throughout the spark range.... and i like the idea of DELETING the mech advance/points from the inside of the dizzy. one less thing to fail you and the ptronix ignitor is nearly indestructable.

IT IS performance you can feel from when you drop it in....

marc from d&d quoted me 300 plus shipping for a pertronix racing unit for the 3.9 with cap rotor and coil! I'm ordering it after christmas, sounds like its the right choice for the right price

I find myself in a similar situation. I found out that the vacuum advance on my RRC's dizzy is gone. Im considering the Flame Thrower as well, and i would like to know what do i need to make the replacement?
Can i use the stock coil? or should i get the Pertronix? The only one i found is 4-6 Cyl. Is this the one to use?

Any info would be great.

Thank you;

Gabe

we run the flame thrower coil as well. they're supposed to be more efficient at producing greater spark than the stock.... kinda nice b/c UNLIKE the msd's you dont need to wire in any sort of extra regulators or external amps.... there are 3 levels of flame throwers to choose from and we have the FT2....

I purchased my set up through Ponderosamustang.com and was very pleased...price was a point for me and I saved about a hundred dollars over D&D's quoted price for the exact same part numbers. I purchased over the phone and had excellent customer service. I went with both the coil and dizzy as the coil was very inexpensive and I retained my Bosch coil as a trail spare. Install was a breeze

Its nice to know this is plug and play, what happens with the ignition module on the side of the distributor? How much more powerful is the spark? Any gains to speak of?

i dont know what the measured gains are.... but the feel is nice. exponentially comperable to a crappy running classic getting a new amp, wires, coil etc - now take that and put on an even tighter, more efficient igniting system. external amp is deleted from this system the ptx ignitor does it all.

even a tuned lucas truck might still have some lag.... the petronix makes some nice vroom vroom to restore your faith in a 3.9 - again, thats what we ran in OUR 3.9 during the race and that motor kicked ass -

ya know - we always talk about what bolt on stuff can make these things run better - this should be on that list. a 4.2 ECU, a pertronix set up, a cam if you can get down there and a valve job. will restore all kinds of awesomeness to a 3.9

Good to know. Doing a cam job is beyond me, but i would really like to drive up a hill while maintaining speed. Do you know which kind of flame thrower coil you used? There are several voltages and inpedences to choose from...

Did anybody reomove the resistor before installing the flame thrower coil? Where is this resistor? Is there any problem if I run the flame thrower 1.5 ohm coil with the resistor in place?

Thank you;

Gabe

I ordered the Pertronix D175510 dizzy this weekend. Won't be here until later in the week but anyone have any advice for wiring it into a 95 LWB with the 4.2? The truck came stock with the relocated amplifier. Do I simply plug the distributor in using the normal 2 wire plug by the distributor and ignore the 3 wire connector which plugs into the amplifier (now removed) or do I need to dig deeper into the wiring harness and remove some wires?

Hoping to sell the relocation kit with a newish amplifier module I replaced a while back to recoup some costs. I've only got $220 in the distributor and new coil (Pertronix 40111 - epoxy filled 1.5 ohm) so it isn't too bad as is.
