You are no longer funny. This guy got three years of use out of a bumper and now is complaining/slamming a company about the finish on it and commenting on their customer support/satisfaction when he didn't even buy from them.
I wasn't trying to be funny I was trying to point out your ignorance.Which I did.

You are an asshole. I never mentioned anything about their customer support. I was talking about quality. Since you are too slow to keep up, you can leave now.

I'm sorry for expecting more out of a company. If you own one, be sure to post up the name so we all steer clear.

Talking about them taking care of their customers and making sure this doesn't happen to them? That sounds like you're mentioning their customer support.

I'm the asshole. You're the one posting negatively about the company with regards to a product you've been using that you expect a coating on to remain perfect forever.

Proper powder coating is a pain in the ass to remove. For example my first homemade bumper used the top half of my stock brush guard. The easiest way to get the 9 year old powder coating off was to use a torch, it would have been a lot quicker to pressure wash it off.

Dude, you should not be able to wash powder-coating away with a pressure-washer.

...nor should your bumper rust to oblivion like those pictures, sheesh, and I thought MY rear bumper looked bad...

Obviously. The rear bumper was not a good job. The OP's desciption of his situation doesn't sound the same...more like it's been abused offroad and the stuff is flaking off around where it's taken hits. Yes a "good" powder coating wouldn't necessarily flake off, but if it was used and abused for three years then I'd say it's not unreasonable(unless all the coating was just flying off while he washed it). If the OP had said something like "completely rusted to shit" underneath instead of "bare metal" I would think it was also just as bad as the rear bumper.

Regardless this thread is just as lame as the threads started about companies not answering emails.

Even if impacted and scraped, powder should not flake. Most appliers know shit-all about powder coating and the way it works. It's bad reputation is entirely due to poor application.

A proper coating is an outstanding thing, and will last through years of use, requiring only very infrequent maintenance. Every few years or so, wipe it down with a plastic restoration fluid, and that's it. You should be able to fix scratches at your leisure without any trouble.

It should be able to take a hit strong enough to bend the metal a reasonable amount, without cracking around the scratched area.

RTE, however, has a long history of bad coating. It's to be expected from their parts at this point. It's not like their stuff is cheap anymore, though. I don't know how well they are doing now, but at the prices they ask, there isn't much of an excuse anymore.

Cheers,

Kennith

Why RTE is still around it beyond me.

It might not be a "cheap" product, but I wouldn't exactly call it a quality product either. "Fit and finish" is part of the overall quality. But then again LR folks have low expectations in this regard.

I'm not the dumbass who thinks that powder coating is going to last forever on a product used for offroading or a product that I didn't take to a powder coating specialist myself.

I really don't get the point of this thread. If he just got the bumper and it was coming off a week after he got it this thread would make sense. He got three years of use out of it before it(the coating) got jacked up. I'd say that's pretty good compared to a lot of peoples experiences with their products and the finish on them. This is just like Jeep people bitching about the coating on Warn products. Just stfu and don't buy their product. Stop telling people about it over and over again.

The point is that for PC to bubble up and flake off there was a problem with something BETWEEN the coating and the material being coated.

This happens when there's Poor Paint Prep. The lack of attention to detail (ie removing all the oils, fingerprints, weld slag, etc. before sending it to coating) is a big deal.

It's like going and getting a fancy new snap-on ratchet and having the chrome peel off. It's doesn't affect the way it works but there is a perception of quality, if these guys can't get the finish right, how could get get the heat treat, or gear shapes right???

I have the same issue on a few spots on mine that just piss me off when I look at them. Sure there meant to be dragged across a rock, but you should be able to hit the spot with a wire wheel and patch it up... but there there's a BIG bubble around a hole, b/c they'd drilled it after the coating and now it's rusting from the inside out. It just bugs me.

Or talk it up, let the Co. know they's better tighten up QC (which RTE has ignored) or hit them in the pocektbook by showing people the product+time.

"HEY EVERYBODY, RTE'S FINISH SUCKS BALLS!!!"

hey rte- that's your que to come in and say "yea, it sucked but through a new pantented jet-age technology we have......blah blah blah.... customer unconditionally satisfied!!!"
You want to spen 1000 dollars on something that looks like crap in 3 yrs? Than YOU stfu, and quit bumping the tread.

Show us where someone said that.

I got maybe 12 months outta mine, then after about 18 months I went holy fuck this thing is crap, finish wise. My Ship still looks pretty good, and so does D1drivers, I saw it at the wilds last year ( i think). The rust bucket hanging from the front of mine, while good for hitting deer and trees, is not a chick magnet.

the products have always held up wel, and Steve was great to work with. The powdercoating has always sucked. I just got my stuff bare, primed it and rattle canned it myself. Once a year I went over everything, sanded a few spots and re-shot it. things seemed to get pretty bad with Jordan buying it, not sure what to expect from the latest owners. They are making Series and Defender stuff now. Justin at Lucky 8 has filled the market where service is concerned.
