Power steering pump squeal D2

When I bought my 2004 Disco, the prior owner said he put a new water pump in. It runs fine until it gets cold (less than 45 degrees... I know it's So Cal cold). Then on start up, and for 20 -30 seconds it whines like it's running dry... then slowly fades. I am wondering if the prior owner should have changed the reservoir, as the filter in the bottom might be restricting flow when it gets cold? It only does it when it is cold. Does that make sense, and has anyone had an issue similar to this? Also the steering seems a little stiff all the time.... I'd appreciate some input from the group..

Really? I hadn't thought about that. It sounds more like the pump is running dry than a belt whine..... but I'll take a look

If it's the tensioner, it won't sound like a belt whine. It'll be the bearing within the tensioner wheel which is making the noise.

Those water pumps used to make a really strange noise like that. You need a stethoscope to find some of these noises. A good mechanics stethoscope is cheaper than buying the wrong part.

Mine was also noisy on cold starts. I switched to synthetic power steering fluid (Pentosin CHF11S) and it never happened again.

I'd probably go with the reservoir. If the pump has ever been replaced, the reservoir should have been at the same time (but probably wasn't).

Hey Jymmie, can you explain why? I'm not getting it. Seems to be the reservoir is just a tank/bottle with a hose on the bottom. I guess there is something (else) I don't understand. Thanks

The reservoir has a screen in the bottom that tends to get clogged with metal shavings from the power steering system (especially after a failure). It is next to impossible to clean it out. When the screen is clogged the pump does not get adequate fluid flow from the reservoir.

easily tell if the filter is clogged.. just look inside your reservoir. You don't always have to replace the reservoir.. especially when they're $$ new..
