So I am getting ready to pull the motor in my 94 D1 and was wondering what clutches you guys have used with great results. The OG clutch has 200k on it and is still working. Just seems like the time to replace it. I did a search but was bombarded with fan clutch posts. Lol thanks for the time.

LOF is pretty much the way to go. I have used them at the shop and no complaints. I am bout to swap the manual transmission from my wifes old d1 to the new one for her so need to get a fresh clutch on order as well. Dont forget to grab all the Syncrogears stuff too. @Annabelle has everything in there and i shortened the shifter handle in all of mine to make them shift way better.

I’m almost certain i used AP (OEM) on the last one. 3000 miles in and no complaints. I replaced it when I replaced the engine in a D1 I purchased DOA. I ordered the clutch assembly before checking the old one. Much to my surprise the one I took out was in excellent condition, measured out almost exactly the same thickness as the new one and absolutely no heat marks on the pressure plate or flywheel. There was zero wear in the flywheel either. It’s the first time I haven’t resurfaced the flywheel when replacing the clutch. The TO bearing was slightly “gravel” sounding, although. I speculated the previous owner had already replaced it but nothing about the gearbox and engine appeared in any way to have been previously removed. The truck only had 55,000 miles but I expected at least moderate wear.

Alternatively, before I was aware of the quality concerns, and a total newbie in the LR world, I used a Britpart clutch in my D1 I converted to 300tdi. 15,000 miles in and it has worked perfectly. Seems I got lucky with the Britpart roll of the dice. Because of the low power 300tdi I slip it a lot more than the V8 to get going on hills. Over the winter I’m going to swap in a 1.4 t-case to hopefully lessen the need for that and make it handle long inclines better.

Ok, put my money where my mouth is, its all your fault for bringing up the topic. I was sitting here minding my own business drinking my morning coffee, behaving and not spending money but you screwed all that up. LOF clutch kit ordered and since i already did the syncrogear shifter stuff i just ordered a transmission cooler plate. I am running an external cooler on the frame on annabelle and wanted to do the same on the wifes. Guess i will have to get motivated in a couple weeks and spend a day swapping it all out.

Sorry about that. I do appreciate all the input. I’ve thought about doing the short shift kit or trimming down the shifter itself. So I guess now would be the time. Might as well rebuild the transfer case while I am at it. I sense a total frame off resto coming. Lol

The LOF throw out bearing is a huge improvement over stock. In my experience, the R380 fails before the clutch itself does, but I’ve definitely seen a bunch of throw out bearing failures

Just don’t waste your money on the LOF lighter clutch spring. Had two in my D1 and both broke. Prior to changing the clutch this year it was very stiff so that may have caused the breakage but the stock spring was fine and went back in after breaking two LOF springs. It did make a noticeable difference though. We used a Sachs kit from Rockauto for 275. Works great so far. Got a Brit part one in my series hybrid v8 and it’s been fine too but the pressure plate was reused and just the disc and TO bearing replaced. I was in a hurry and my buddy had the disc in town. Always made me nervous but so far so good and it’s a beach crawler. Gordo

Now i have to hijack this thread because you forced me to start the swap, parts are on the way and Rover Rendezvous is over. BTW that was an incredible weekend with the club. OK back at it, we spent the day yesterday yanking out the consul and getting the pedal box out for the swap, almost there but totally forgot the steering shaft goes through the box so working on that. . The clutch shows it was delivered but to where im not sure. My neighbor was grabbing deliveries from my doorstep while i was gone so might see it tonight when they get home. Synchrogears should have the oil cooler plate here tomorrow, DHL from the UK is only 3 days and it shipped Monday. I am going to try and slam it in in 2 days so i want everything out, cleaned prepped and ready to go. When i did Annabelles swap i popped the transmission in on the rack and then pushed it off to the side so it was out of the way. I had to fabricate the transmission mount bracket since those are scarce. It took 2 years to find all the pieces individually to do the swap and in the end i totally forgot to grab the upper shifter, that took a few weeks but Dave at ashcroft ended up having one laying around and i was able to get that too. Drove it around for a month with just the little nub for a shifter.

this is true

Ive used whatever brands were reasonably pricedand never had a problem, but I do put a new one in with every rebuild the 4.6 eats

I ordered this Clutch kit Thursday early morning direct from LOF in the UK. Packed the trailer and left for the weekend. Friday night DHL dropped this off and my neighbor grabbed it off the porch. Im always amazed by DHL (as long as they dont loose the package)

Today the R380 is out on the ground. Now to get it all prepped.

I can't imagine the r380 being "way better" with a shorter shifter :-D clearly you include an extra "arm day," or two during your weekly gym visit 😉

Who's LOF?

You are 100% on those synchros.. also, if you want to run gear oil you may want to eliminate or modify the lube pump.

If you end up with a spare 380... dm me :))

i run MTL in them. I do a full setup with an external oil cooler and the syncro gearbox oil cooler plate, AN lines to external cooler and eliminate the lines running up to the radiator. I tend to run these pretty hard, I was towing with Maleficent before the cam decided it wanted to be an A cup instead of a D cup.

As for the shifter i do the syncro gearbox Slickshift kit and then cut 4 inches off the handle. it makes it shift like a sports car and not a truck anymore. Its a night and day difference. I also make an aluminum Ski slope for the center consul for the manual transmission so it all looks factory when doing the swap.

LOF is a clutch manufacturer in the UK. Their kits come with all metal throw out bearing and steel retaining springs not plastic, they have 3 different kits for the Rovers depending on use. I opted for the Power Spec kit since we will be wheeling it.

Its cool what you can do with these rigs as far as modifications. its really unlimited and if you can dream it you can make it happen (in the right hands) I am building the race truck and when i think of something i want to put in it and quick google search and some bloke in the US or UK has it already thought of it or made it for me. But alas this thread is about Clutches so I will have to start another one about building the Discoveryracingteam dream.

I second using MTL. I have two R380s and an LT77. They shift as good as or better than I could hope. No second gear grumpiness whatsoever. It’s impressive what fresh and high quality gear oil does for these boxes.

Okay, need to know more..about all of that except the MTL part.. I've been an MTL fan for years. Redline is the only way to go.. kinda like ARP for bolts and screws.

Man, calm down there Clay :)

The stock configuration has a thermostat in it and the Syncrogear plate is just a pass through (plus it looks pretty) it also allows you to run AN fittings and i run a Derale 2 pass finned cooler attached to the frame eliminating the cooler in the radiator. Now there is one issue doing this and that the transmission fluid will take a lot longer to get to an operating temperature but I am not easy on my cars. they get pushed hard.

As for clutches here is the link. Like i said i have used a few of them and they are the go to for clutches. Here in the states we dont have a ton of manuals but I do occasionally get one in and this is what i use.
