I need to ship a built third member with a Detroit to a friend and board member in CA. My plan was to use a 5 gallon paint bucket from Home Depot and duct tape the shit out of the lid and slap a UPS label on it. I think this is how GBR did it back in the day. Is this still the preferred method? Will the regular white paint buckets from HD hold up for a few days in UPS hell?

That's how I got the spares I put my new stuff in. Showed up in a bucket without damage.

I'd look for a quality bucket from the paint section, though, rather than the ones that used to be 99 cents at the end of the aisle. They are a bit tougher, and crucially, just a bit taller.

It's not required, but it would certainly help, and allow a little room for some padding on the bottom.

Cheers,

I would put some additional padding/cardboard in the bottom(at the contact point) of the ring gear if you ship it with the pinion *up*)
I have a couple stored in buckets with the pinion down so what little oil is left collects in the pinion end.
Drill several holes around the lid and ziptie the lid to the bucket.
Might want to check the bend on the handle where it connects to the bucket---I had to rebend mine to make it stay.
Shipping weight of an ARB 3rd was 65lbs I think...

I just shipped one in a regular 5 gallon bucket from HD. I took the flange off so the lid would fit properly. Not a big deal, just has to be torqued back on to spec. I used packing tape and a shit ton of saran wrap to keep the lid in place, but I really like the drilling holes and cable ties idea.
Pack the bucket very well. Cardboard at all the contact points between the diff and bucket. Pack it tight so it can't shift around inside the bucket.

*UPS charged me $9 extra because it was a bucket and some nonsense about not going across their rollers at the sorting facility/having to be moved around by hand. They said if the bucket was in a box I would have been fine. I complained and they refunded my money but figured I'd mention it.

Use some foam on the bottom. To cushion it. I had a toy one that broke a tooth and broke the bottom of the bucket when it got to me. Was a huge pita to get ups to cover it.

We use 5-gallon buckets. A couple of well-places drywall screws to secure the lid, some extra tape around the edge and away she goes.

You did that with a plastic tote for some of my stuff. Can't remember what it was.

Screws will absolutely hold a plastic container closed during shipping. Taping over them twenty times and not mentioning it's screwed together will ensure I spend at least ten minutes wondering why I can't seem to open the box.

two buckets. Spray some great stuff in one bucket then put the bucket o' third in that bucket. Then use 4 or 5 screws on the lid.
The spray foam will help cushion the blow when the UPS guy drops it. And don't forget to put a 'heavy' sticker on it.

How much pubic hair was in it? Were the pubes kinky or straight? What color were the pubes? Were they really long pubes?

I stacked some cardboard in the bottom and a little around the sides, then screwed the lid on and duct taped. We'll see. :)
