You guys that have built a flip down tray on the back door, what are you using them for? I can't think of any practical uses other than cutting food on it if your cooking by back of your truck. Id imagine it to be too weak to hold anything else.

Funny that Ben's rear door came up twice in my mind within two minutes on DW.

It doesn't have to be weak. So long as you design and mount it properly, such a tray can be quite strong.

Any raised platform is good for keeping tools and equipment off the ground. You can cook or prepare food on them, as has been noted, and...

Hell. You may as well ask why tables were invented.

Ben's table was very handy on the Dweb trip. It's a very sturdy table. I'm going to build one for the back of my rig.

Wondering if anyone is using it for something more than this.

You put stuff on it. It's like the ground, only a few feet higher.

The people of our tribe craft these objects to increase productivity, enhance sanitation, and reduce physical strain.

Tables do make sense. I just dont see a point to having a table attached to my door for cutting/cooking food. Just seems like a pain in the ass to keep clean and you'd always have to be right there at the truck to use it as opposed to a portable table you can move around.

If I was building a truck for a specific purpose and space was a premium, I could see it being more useful I suppose. Sounds like just one of those things you have to see or use once in person to truly appreciate it.

If you do not like the idea of having the "kitchen/dinner" table tied to your rover, think of it as a nice work bench that is not on the ground in the dirt & mud, or for some older folks, a lot higher than the ground for working on most anything. :) I like the idea of the drop down table, but we do carry a fold-up plastic table that works well, but depending on how you trail ride, there is not always a good place to put a table and you can prepare a nice hot snack or meal with ease , which is always a plus!

I often build a fire right over my fuel pump and roast marshmallows.

Do you always stop for long enough periods of time to take out your camp table? My guess is you'll say yes just to further diminish the reason for a rear door table.

I carry a folding table too. When I'm on the trail and stop for lunch, I don't want to pull out my fold up table just to cook some cheddarwurst. The fold down table is not a pain in the ass in any sense. Easy to keep clean. Easy to use etc.

Everyone I know has built their truck for a very specific purpose and yes space is a premium. That is, as long as you like to keep a tidy truck/ packing job.

Ben's table is the original design by Marc Olivares. The amazing thing about Marc's design is that dozens of people have made "their version" of this table and a few hacks even sell them but nobody has come close to the functionality and aesthetics of the Olivares design.
