I switched to rotella from mobil1. i had a quiet ticking with mobil1 and with rotella it went away

what wieght Mobil? I like the 10w40 High Mileage M1, Ive been using it since the day I got my Defender. Ive been using the Rotella in my Classic, it seems to like it, I think I will go back to the M1 0w40 or 10w40 in the Classic. I got better gas mileage with the M1, its like 8 more $ at Sprawl Mart than the Rotella.

Chris,

I'm using chevron Delo 400 CJ-4 LE, which is rated ACEA European Service Categories E-7.

opinion?

I can't find anything about it sheer rating anywhere.. but the CJ-4 spec calls for 3.5 min I believe

I did not see where Rotella's IMHO is a ACEA rated A3/b3 oil. I did not see that in the 3.75 l bottle. It just says API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF
API SL, SJ, SH.

Mobil 1 TD Synth 5W40 is API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS/CI-4/CH-4/CG-4/ SM/SL/SH
ACEA E7/E5/ HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC ASTM D 4683 3.9

Between the 2, being a 15-40 it MUST have a HTHS rating of at least 3.5, as does a ACEA a3/b3 oil

The TD m1, I dont know about, but it looks like a HTHS of 3.9.

If thats true I retract my first staement.

Chris thats what's on the M1 TD Synth 5W40 chart, that it's HTHS is 3.9
And the M1 Synth 10W40 High Milage is ACEA A3/B3,A3/B4, and it's HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC ASTM D 4683 4.06 (Four Point Zero Six) this is higher than Rotella.
Does it make it better.

I cant believe I am posting this, but the HTHS of the M1 15w50 is 4.5, the diesel 5w40 HTHS is 3.9 and the 10w40 High Mileage is 4.06. I dont like the idea of 15w50 in a Rover V8, some people run it. I think the best oil for the Rover V8 is the M1 10w40.

The higher the HTHS rating, the better the Cam is protected. Based on that, I woudl say the 5-40 td is a good choice with a rating like that.

Actually, both are good choices, but the 5-40 has better sheer rating, and it's low enough to use year round.

That said, 15-50 is a little heavy, regardless of hths.

Rover4x4 is that the M 1 Synth High Mile 10W40?

Yep. I like the 10w40. My Classic with the Rotella doesnt like cold mornings at all. But the top end of my 90 running the M1 will leak down when it sits for weeks without being started takes less time for the oil light to go out than the Classic on a cold morning. The cost of the M1 is more than the Rotella both are excellent oils but Ill never run anything other than the M1 in a Rover V8.

Like you, I'm going for the Mobil 1 Synth 10W40 HM in May (it has the right specs for summer).

The M1 Synth TD 5W40 has 4000 miles in my Rover and it's still clean, it's a good winter oil & all season, also great on mpg, but my Rover has a lot of miles. So I'm going to try the 10W40.

Rotella 15W40 is to thick for winter, it's good in trucks since they are always on the road and they idle for hours. If I lived down south or in the dessert it would be perfect.

where i'm at right now, duh...
I switched to Rotella 15w40 and one thing I have noticed is the oil looks cleaner than the mobil 1 did. I don't know if that means the Mobil 1 has better detergents or what not, but the Rotella seems cleaner when I pull the dipstick out to check it every so often.

At how many miles do you check it, and replace it, dirty oil also means that the oil has cleaned up the engine, the dirt is suspended in the oil. I have M1 TD 5W40 in my D2 now at 4000K + the oil still looks clean.

I'm using the new Mobil1 0w-40 and to be honest with you, my engine is quieter, gas mileage has improved, and it seems to run a lot smoother and cleaner. So whatever the hell it's worth, yes it was very expensive, but it's the best I've run through it so far. Say what you want, it's HTHS and ratings make it well worth every penny.

I was thinking of switching to Rotella 15W40 as my summer oil in my high milage Rover for cam protection, but the specs of the 5W40 seemed better and so do the 10W40 M1 Synth.
