Rover Died on the way home last night....

After pulling off and filling the tank with gas, I got back on Hwy 101 and just after pulling into the left lane for stop and go traffic, the engine died. I was able to get over to the shoulder, and the car would restart but immediately stumble and die.

While waiting for the tow, and letting the truck sit for 10 minutes I tried to restart and it did run for about 2 minutes before stumbling and dying again.

So, it's now sitting at a shop that a co-worker recomended, but I've never used.

Of course I have no idea what is the issue but I feel like maybe the fuel pump, or fuel pump relay?

One other thing to note. I recently had the fan clutch go out (and have been driving with extreme fan roar), and have read here that it can burn up the water pump if not changed. I have not experienced any over heating, so I'm unsure if these two things are related.

So while I wait for the verdict from a new mechanic, can anyone give me their thoughts on what they think I'll hear?

I suppose it's possible that I got bad gas, but I've never before had a problem at Chevron.

I just spoke to the mechanic who told me that it's a bad fuel pump. He said it was reading zero fuel pressure and they test the fuel pump by climbing under the car and tap the tank with a mallet. When they did this it started right up.

well...i hope hes not just throwing parts at it and he really checked the pressure...you know how these mechanics can be!

the important thing right now is to not let him rip you off! i was once quoted $1100 for a fuel pump replacement on my 96. i just didnt have time to fool with it at the time...i figured $400 or so...and be done with it. needless to say...i laughed in his face! i replaced it my self in 45 min for around $300 for the pump.

replacing a fuel pump on these things is easy! there is a door under the rear cargo mat that opens up (note the bolts are prob rusted beyond removal-have cutter!). just dont let him ream your ass on it! post back here if you decide to do it yourself and we can walk you through it!

Consider it fully reamed. $900 worth. Fortunately for AAA the tow didn't cost me. But add in the rental for the last two days and it's nearly $1100. Damn!

Since moving to California, and choosing a place to live before I moved from Oregon, I have no place to work on my truck. Freaking sucks, I feel like I'm gonna have to pay someone to do my brakes etc. when I should be able to do them myself.

Had the pump give out on my RR just last week
96 Impala from NAPA is the exact same pump for $72
Just need to change the pump blade connectors
