Heating in RRC SUCK. Cooling marginally sucks. If you live where it gets 0 and you need to drive it, you will not have a good time especially in ice/snow.

This. So much. I looked around for a 2nd gen SR and could not find one anywhere east of the mississippi that wasn't a 250k rotbox. Unfortunately these trucks are probably heading to the junkyard faster than D1s are.

Less stuff to go wrong. And no emissions BS to worry about.

Mine had 198k when I bout it. Condition is about like a 75k disco... Everything is overbuilt. I had to go 700 miles to get it. They are rare. My only complaint is that it is stupid slow off the line. Like the slowest truck I have ever driven. But a new takeout motor from the junkyard is 250 max. Can't even touch a rover for that cheap.

It is no Land Rover though. I do enjoy driving discos and newer range rovers.... I feel like I made a mistake selling my 2003 with the bad motor sometimes...

I honestly never liked d1's or RRC's. I did like the p38, until I got a taste of l322...

Post the dollar amount you are willing to spend on the mods, engine conversion, and maintenance to make it an effective trail truck. I'll tell you what to buy instead.

X3 on this. If cabin size and storage is not an issue go with a 3rd Gen 4runner, couldn't be happier with ours. A few years (97-99, I think) came with rear lockers. However, I'll be on the market for a J100 in the next few years if family plans come to fruition. I'll want a classic when my hair is gray, simply because it's already gray.

For the cost of Land Cruiser, you could buy a cherry D1, fully refurbish every wear part, outfit it with off road goodies, and then buy another cherry one to part out.
For the cost of a cherry 80, one could buy Ben Little's D1 with every thing replaced, refurbished, and outfitted with off road goodies.
But it was an unfair comparison on Mike's part. An 80 should only be bought by a person looking for an 80, not D1 or a Classic.

I have an unlimited budget. I just feel the need to torture myself buy buying a $2500 20 year old rover.

Holy Shit! With that kinda money, you could go to SoCal, find a cherry truck and have your way with it.

I don't think I've ever paid near that for a RRC and my trail rig was basically given to me and it has very little rust.

I prefer to not tally up the amount "Invested" into it since then though.

Rear locker, 2wd, 4wd,4wd locked and 4 low. Heated seats, leather, and reliable.

Plus it won the Dakar like 11 years in a row, and 1/4 the cost of an 80, and bigger cv's too.

True, however telling your parents that you are gay would really suck.

That was a pretty sweet ride for Ebay. It's sold, though.

The RRC can take a beating. I've seen them with trashcan lid turbos in scavenger hunt rallies getting the immortal shit kicked out of them, and many of the older vehicles I've been handed when out and about were Classics.

I especially like the two door models from the dawn of their era. That's why I don't have an RRC in the driveway.

When I come across the right early '70s RV8 two door, it'll be a different story.

Cheers,

Kennith
