RRC Rear Bumper/Tire Carrier

As promised: Note, still have to finish the tire carrier, but this bumper is designed with the tire carrier in mind. I will be finishing the tire carrier portion probably next weekend. Also, there will be quarter panel guards that will bolt to the rear bumper assembly. This serves three purposes:

1) Allows folks to mount just the bumper with no quarter protection, some folks actually do this...

2) Allows me to build one bumper that can be adapted to stock quarter panels or cut quarter panels.

3) Saves on shipping costs as the box won't be as big;)

Also, do note that this bumper is currently unfinished. Much easier to make adjustments before final welding.

Here they are, flame away...

looks nice, how does it tie into the frame. the bolts like the original?

If bolts to the factory points, no need to cut anything. One 7/16" bolt and one 1/2" bolt. Shouldn't go anywhere.

edit: I took some measurements and this bumper sticks out about ~1/2" further than the stock one. Had to get enough room to place a hinge on it.

Larry, that is a good looking bumper, I also like the corner you've put on it. Here are some misc. pictures of my bumper. The one that I built for Scott is a little different in that it doesn't have the same look on the top and it doesn't require the quarter to be cut and it has mounts for the lower quarter. I've been looking at some mounts for a spare but have no mock up right now and really want to abuse one with the mount on it first before I start putting them on for other people. Both bumpers are 3/16"s all around and have two 1" x 2" 7/8" shackle mounts that are the mount points for the bumper to the frame. It mounts with (4) 1/2" grade 8 bolts that utlilze the stock frame mounts with no cutting of the frame. I tested it on the trail and have done some pretty good drops onto it and it's held up really good. I want $500 for either one painted or unpainted(3"cut quarter or stock quarter).

What are you thinking of asking for a bumper like that?

Right now I'm shooting for $650 without the tire carrier. Probably another $450 for the tire carrier option. Unlike most other tire carriers, I plan on placing the hinge on the drivers side with the tire on that side as well. My experience is that with the tire on the passenger side like most tire carriers it totally blocks what little vision you have from the drivers point of view.

Who makes this stuff?

I think the quarter guards will be included, unless they end up costing quite a bit more than I anticipate.

I am considering building a spare tire holder that fits in the receiver hitch but rides above the bumper, since I have two recovery points on my rear bumper. it would be easy to just take the pin out and drop on the ground if you needed access to the lower tailgate.

I did this already, with the pin to lower for tailgate access and all. I designed one years ago and had it built by a shop in Milan, IL. I still use it all of the time because the 265-75 will not fit where the stock tire did. I also didn't want to take up all the room in the payload area. If I could find the time over the weekend I will send you some pic's.

At one time I wanted to market the concept to Reese or Draw-Tite but IIRC they weren't interested. I am a little scared to market to Rovers North.

I have the general idea but it could be improved. The approach angle could be better but no matter how you end up it can still hit when off road (a drop off creek bed) because it extends beyond the bumper. You will also need to relocate the license plate and perhaps add some lights for it -depending on your local LEO's.

Larry, I'll be wanting one with quarter protection.. will this be very similar to yours on the beastly RRC? Still not sure when I'll be ready for one, but keep us all informed. Now if you only fabbed up a front bumper for us.

The quarter panels will be different than the one on my big red RRC. It really doesn't even have any quarter panel protection...

Been thinking about the front RRC bumper for a bit... Kind of want to take a few months off from prototyping though as it can really try my patience. I'll probably build one up for a buddy here in Colorado and go from there.

Hi,

Do you have any photos of it?

Cause i have a strong 4x4 bicycle carrier that goes on the hitch and i always think about modding it the way you went.

Cheers

Larry can you build one of these bumpers with the tire carrier to work with a 2 inch body lift?

I "might" be able to do this. Honestly I would have to have a look at a few things seeing how I haven't actually seen a body lifted RRC in person. I would assume the bumper would just need to sit 2" higher than stock? I'll have to take a few measurements of the bumper in finished form to make sure it will fit. If everything lines up it would be as simple as just lowering all the mounting holes 2".

Let me get a couple of these out the door first and then I'll take a look at this. This is assuming you can wait. If not, I could possibly get you a bumper shell without any mounts welded in and just let you find someplace locally to do it?

Either way I am tied up until after the National Rally with this stuff, so it will be a few weeks minimum.

Nice thread everybody. Found a RRC tire carrier some of you might like to see. www://dap-inc.com/homeframe.htm (scroll down to find) has a spare tire carrier for the RRC for $379.95. That's all I know about it, the pic shows a nice-looking rig that appears sturdy but no specs on the materials are shown, guess you'd need to contact them for details. Take a look.
