Sounds like a hell of a trip, with a ton of carnage to boot.

Jack, out of curiosity, what winch lines broke, and what caused them to fail?

Mine and Craig's.
I've already had mine respliced.

My take is that I severly underestimated how abrasive frozen snow is.
I looked it as "clean" in the sense that it has no dirt or rock in it and therefore let my line drag through banks unprotected like in this pic: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/rubicon/rubicon001 461.jpg
I hardly even let the line touch dirt, but I let it touch snow and I think that's what killed it.

That said, I think that broken lines are just a fact of life and if you have a synthetic line, you should know how to at least do a field splice. Bill Burke told me he does them all the time. When you get home have it properly repaired.

I just knotted the line and put it under a couple of raps and used my extension.

Even with the breakage I'd still rather use synthetic than steal.

25 - 30PSI?? Damn, thats what I run on the highway. Not wonder you don't break shit. You just do burn outs.

I was not inpressed with the XZL's, at all! Mud Ride and Trevor Combs both had them.

35/40 on the highway.

I just drop it ten psi when I hit dirt and i don't go lower unless I have to. The one time I ran John Bull in Big Bear at 18 psi I cracked an Alloy. That was a shocker.

Of course my truck weighs in at over 6000 on a multi-day trip.

I have no idea what my truck weighs in at. Add about 400lbs worth of gear and tool..... But, I usally run 15 psi, but have went as low as 9 psi on mistake. Makes a world of difference! I'll get beadlocks the day I get my axle breakage problem fixed.....

XZL's....man have I seen those things perform poorly. They seem to last forever but eat shit in mud and rocks.

I'm curious about how your truck weighs that much? I had almost everything I own packed into my truck when I moved from CO and it didn't weigh 6000 and I'm pretty sure that it was way more stuff than you would ever take on a multi-day trip. And heavy duty bumpers wouldn't be much of a difference in weight. I suppose tires could be bigger.. but what are you carrying?

My MTs in the skinny size work for me.
I've got some second-hand XZLs waiting to go on the 110 and I'm all pumped because they're the hotness, but we'll have to see if they prove to be superior in performance. The XZLs certainly seem tough.

I like the tall skinny too and nearly went the XZL route too. I talked about a half dozen different people that are presently using them or used them here in CO and in UT (moab slick rock).

After talking to them, I decided $400 a tire was not even worth it for merely OK performance and horrible noise. They will be tough and last a while though.

A buddy of mine has XZL's on his 110 and he is not very pleased with there performance. Noisy on the road, hard to balance, horrible grip on bedrock or slick rock and they are heavy. The good things about them, strong and stiff sidewall and long lasting, oh and they look cool. Other than that he isn't very happy with them.

My Mom used to do the Rubicon with a stock 1980 CJ 7 back in the early 80's with my little brother and I. Past Cadillac Hill down to the bridge for lunch and back home in Tahoe City for dinner.

To this day I wonder how that Cadillac ever got that far back.

It's a good little trail.

Shit I wish we'd had your mom with us.
Sounds like we wouldn't have gotten so beaten up.

That's badass.

I doubt any disco was going to run the 52" version. There was a local guy here who had those 52" Michelins on his YJ. I think he ran them with no air pressure whatsoever and they still had stiff sidewalls...

this guy had XCLs with holes in the side wall so large that you could reach into them and the tires STILL stood up:
