Shit I wish we'd had your mom with us.
Sounds like we wouldn't have gotten so beaten up.

That's badass.

She was a pretty rad lady...

I haven't been on that trail since I was 10 or 11 and would love to do it again someday... With less snow than you had to deal with...

I was looking to get them quick. I was looking at 9x16.

Heard of people getting them for under $300, but never found it and besides, the price was less important. After I heard peoples opinions, I'll stay with my tried and true BFGs, thanks.

Most of the places I called said-- what tire?

The places that had them usually did not have the correct size and wouls say, yeah I can get them, do you need them before 2007?

Also don't get me wrong here tough as hell tires. Just the $$$ and for what I do, not worth the $$$.

Well I for one am pumped about the sizes that the XZLs, XCLs and the like come in. I think 7.5 and 8.25 are pretty killer. They just look right on a truck like my MOD.

Steve cooper hooked me up with 7.5s for the 110. Now they may end up being a little dinky for how much lift I will have, but the super skinny factor is REALLY nice when you have a tire on the hood like I do. Even a 255 is too tall to see over. 7.5s are like Mischa Barton. Super slim and super hot. The 7.5s make even my 235/85s on the disco look fat and jeeped out. I have a friend trying to convince me to put the 7.5s on it.

8.25s may end up being the better fit for my 110, but they are pretty much unavailable and even if they weren't I couldn't swing the $2400 for 6 tires.

I think one of the arguments for the super tough XZL type Michelin is if you only run one spare. I've got more room for error because I insist on running two spares on my trucks so BFGs on the disco isn't exactly a liability. David was sweating it big time when he started having tire trouble on the Rubicon early on. Maybe with XZLs there would be less to worry about.

Jack, as much of an ass as you can be at times, I'm damned jealous and it looks like the trip was awesome.

Nice to see you and Chapman getting "along" too, kinda wierd.........

Are frame sliders different than the sliders under your sill?

yes.
they protect the frame and prevent the ears where the trailing links attached from getting hung up or mangled.

you can see them in this pic:

Where did you get those frame sliders? Or did you make them?

I did not make them.
Those were given to me buy a friend. And I greatly appreciated the gift. They are stainless steel and based on the rockware design.

What kind of set up is need to run the Rubicon?(IE.. tire size, lockers and such)

well i'm no authority.
i've only done it once and some people do it yearly.

a common rule of thumb that I've heard before is 32" tires and one locking differential and some means of recovery.

take that as you will.

of course I'm sure there are people who do it open diffed in stockers.

Can't disagree with you there Jack on the XZLs. They are tough and I too like the sizes. Taller and skinnier is good for me. I would not base my tire decision on one trail. I'd rather have good performance, be in my own cheap ass budget and sweat a bit if I do end up with tire failure on a nasty long trail like the Rubi, but likely that will never happen.

Cheers and good job running such a tough long trail.

I think that the correct answer on running a trail like that is about the same as running any tough trail.

but I'd call dual lockers, protection, recovery points and winch. But a wench might be more fun on such a long trail.

WOW. Great pics!!! Looks like Craig's truck took quite a bit of damage. How many days on the Rubicon?

5 days if you can believe that.
It must be some kind of record for longest time on that trail.

Mine aren't KVT.

Really, they look exactly like his. Exactly alike.. At least in the dark picture you posted...

**edit, either way they are a good thing to have.. Whether they are KVT's, Rockware's, or someones elses...
