... looks like we're going to have about 15 people in the house tonight... and maybe 3 or 4 dogs.

What a scene to come to after a week-long trip to Moab.

Well, the streets caved in near a house I wanted to buy four years ago, and it looks like the neighborhood I wanted to buy a house this year is going to burn down... I just should stay put...

...or move east.

Seriously, good luck.

We have been thinking about everyone in area of the fires all day.

For sure, our prayers are with you.

Stay safe and keep us posted.

Has anyone heard from kellymoe?

If I remember correctly, his unit is in that area.

p.m., I feel your pain. Good luck to you folks out there in cali. Where i live just had the "Castle Rock" fire which threatened to burn down the town. Most people evacuated, the national guard was called in, the place was a mess (I signed a waiver and stayed put - my immediate risk was being stranded, not being burned out.) The town was saved by back burning, a massive effort by firefighter on the ground and in the air, and shitloads of luck with the weather. No loss of life and no buildings destroyed, but it was definitely touch and go for a day or two. I hope things turn out as good for you as they did for us.

Thanks guys, we should be okay. It hurts me to see a bunch of people here glued to the TV - which doesn't really offer any information.

But... it is a worse fire than Cedar fire of 2003 (when, coincidentally, we've also had about 10 people in the house for a week). Back then, 230000 acres burned in a week - this time, 145000 - in one day and a half.

The news is certainly worthless. If your able to:

San Diego Fire Net: 146.730 (-) no PL
Lots of eyes in the field.

I've been thinking about all the west coasters....hope you are all out of harms way and staying safe!!
It's a nasty month for the weather and I certainly know how people feel who have lost their homes....don't take any chances.

It's FUBAR here.

The air is thick with smoke all along coastal North County.
300,000 people have already been evacuated.

I flew to Sacramento for work yesterday and turned around and came right back.

My parents have already evacuated to LA.

My disco is in full armageddon mode and ready to leave at any moment.

Moved the 110 to an underground garage. The Porsche and the Range Rover will just have to burn if it makes it to this part of the coast.

Tom and I are on the HAM repeater nets. It's the best way to get info and submit reports.

I can't believe how unprepared people are and how unwilling they are to leave voluntarily. Tom and I went to do a second stocking round of food, fuel, water and cash last night. I can't believe it but everything is available in abundance. Even bottled water is fully stocked on the shelves.

I probably know the answer to this question but here goes:

We have a vacation planned for this weekend to San Diego. Leaving Houston Friday a.m. and returning Monday p.m. This includes a one day wine trip to Temuclula (sp?) on Saturday. Should we cancel our trip and go somewhere else?

Also, the guy who planned the whole trip for his wifes 40th is there already and said it isn't that bad and we should still come. Belevie it or not he is a Houston Firefighter. This may be a biased opinion coming from a firefighter?

So the deal is do we reschedule the whole trip and go somewhere else or do we tough it out. We will be staying somewhere close to San Diego bay and just kinda doing the tourist thing. Right now the husband is there, the wife is getting ready to fly on Wednesday and then there would be about 18 more of us flying out Friday morning.

Jack or any others who live there, any advice would be greatly appreciated asap!!!!

Thanks

Unfortunately, probably not a good idea. I don't know where you would be staying (at present, they are reporting that all lodging throughout the city is full) but more importantly, Temecula isn't far from the Fallbrook fire. Making things worse, Temecula is ruralish area with a lot of undeveloped areas full of combustable material.

Keep an eye on the news:
www.signonsandiego.com/
www.cbs8.com/
www.nbcsandiego.com/
www.kusi.com/

I can't find a good map currently, but keep an eye on the area North of Highay 76 and East of Interstate 15. Perhaps if by some miracle they get Fallbrook under control it would be possible, but there are mandatory evacuations there right now.

Kai,

the chances are that these fires burning now will be out by then - but the others may flare up. Temecula is far enough away from here, but there's a fire burning near Fallbrook which is about 10 miles from Temecula.

Dee - don't know anything about Poway; the news are amazingly worthless, worse than in 2003. They have surely shit their pants, having ordered entire Carmel Valley and Eastern Del Mar to evacuate, for there's not much to burn there (plowed fields and housing developments).

I have to keep five rather small kids inside - they'll get banana soon...
