Steering Box Major Leak!

Hey guys

Just did a search for steering box rebuilds, looks to be a pain in the A$$. My box seems to be good except for the seal where the pitman arm attaches. I bought a complete rebuld kit just incase, but for now I will just change that seal. Any input? Do I need any special tools? Special tools were mentioned on another thread. I have a pitman arm puller, any thing else? :banghead:

You get one thing fixed, and another thing breaks!

typically when it leaks there it was from an internal failure...so you may temporarily...and i mean temporarily stop the bleeding but beleive me it will blow out again.

l hope not. When I bought the disco, it was filled with DOT 3 power steering fluid, and it leaked then. The previous owner filled it, and never drove it due to him losing his job(he never even got it reqistered). I did not know any better and kept filling with DOT 3, and the leak slowly got worse. Wasn't until last week when i read an old post about the pumps requiring ATF. Do you think the seals got eaten up by the Dot 3???

Will T. do you have a used one in inventory?

x2 the Lucas. I had a thread going a long time ago where someone told me of a way to blow that lower seal out purposely to replace it. I don't remember how to do it though.

The Lucas has really slowed mine down. I might add a little every couple of months. A drip here and there is much cheaper than a new box.

I'm way beyond the stop leak point...It comes out just about as fast as i pour it in. Yea...its a small rover river:ack:

The power steering system requires ATF? I've never heard of that, is that true and could PS fluid actually cause damage?

Also, IF you end up needing a new PS box try Meridian Auto Parts. Prices are pretty good and their suppose to be really well built.

Power steering fluid supposedly eats the "O" rings, seals, and destroys the pump???
I used in mine and now i have a quart of fluid on my garage floor. If i were you I'd drain and refill with ATF.

Someone told me the RAVE goes over how to rebuild the box. I haven't looked at mine to find out though.

I would check with Will Tillery before getting one anywhere else first.

mine is spewing out the top between the aluminum cover plate and the casting.

I'm going to attempt to fix it this weekend, but the seal kit is $100 from AB vs $300 for a rebuilt box.

if you are going to have the box out just get it bite the bullet and replace it, its such a messy job ive done 4 of them and swear at everyone for that stinky burning fluid.
