Steering box woes.

I can?t locate the exact source of the leak (need an assistant), but it is minor dripping until I turn the wheel to the extreme, then it gushes out (judging by the mess).

My solution so far is to top up the ps reservoir and avoid parallel parking, but am I endangering myself by continuing driving?

How difficult is it to replace the steering box? Can a gung-ho amateur handle it?

Did you try Lucas power steering stop leak?

Clean up the box with some degreaser and start the truck to see where it is leaking.

If it is leaking from a seal, the lucas should slow it down.

The worst thing that will happen is you will piss out all of your fluid and burn up your pump. The power steering will go out and you will be steering a 5k pound truck like it was 1950.

Any play? Any grinding?

Know what you are dealing with first. You should be able to clean off the box and see where it is dripping after 2 minutes of driving.

I just changed mine a couple weeks ago. Easy job, just time consuming.

Tip - when using the puller to get the arm off of the shaft, put plenty of tension on the puller, then wack the side of the arm with a hammer. This made my arm pop right off.

Also - I've never successfully used a puller. I use the sledge-hammer method. After removing the nut, hit the drop arm at 6 oclock and 3 oclock REALLY HARD. The rod will fall right out. Also, for a gung ho first timer: DRAIN THE BOX!!! After the hoses are all disconnected, turn right, left right left untill no more fluid comes out of the box. This will help you stay dry if you are going to bench press that thing down all by yourself. You will need a wheel alignment when you are done. Have fun!

Check for a hole in the hose. Mine did the same thing.

Just replaced the box in a parking lot after breaking the sector shaft, what a PITA!

Have fun!

x2 on Will Tillery. I cleaned off the box to make sure it was not the hoses, and then I bought a low mileage box from Will had the independent shop put it in. CHEAP! LR refurbished are 1200 bucks for a D2.

The reason I say to clean it up and find the leak is that it might be leaking from a hose, the pump, the reservoir, or the box. It would be good to know which part to throw at the beast to quench its thirst for attention.
