Are you a mallcrawler or do intend on offroading? If you leave the stock springs, the 235/85s will mangle the body panels.

I'l be using this as a hunting rig. No extreme flex whatsoever

this is from a number of years ago I was running the factory HD springs front and rear with aftermarket bumpers and sliders so net lift was pretty much stock.

235/85/16's

Just a fair warning, it will make you a lot slower and stopping a lot more 'fun' on the road. If you dont care, then they will work out. Chopping and +2" springs are the only way.

Yeah, not sure why you want to drop tires on that obviously aren't a good match for stock suspension. A 2" lift isn't that expensive and with extended bump stops (if you don't need tons of flex), you'll be in much better shape. Otherwise, you also run the risk of shredding your new tires as well as doing body damage.

with alot of trimming you can run 235 /85 /16 stock and flex the crap outa a D1

that is about the biggest tire that will fully stuff on a D1 into the wheel wells.

the bonus is the COG of the truck will be really low and allow you to wheel the piss outa it in a very safe way.

Definitely not optimal and why trim if you don't have to? Anyway, he's done the right thing and ordered a lift anyway at this point...

not optimal?

why trim if you dont have to?

for a lower safer COG...thats why...for a hunting truck that isnt going to see tough trails ever as he posted I would have trimmed the piss outa the thing and threw the 235's on there and be done with it...but thats just me I guess.

sorry I am not into vanity lift just performance, many people want the cool look of a lift, I want a stable truck that goes where I need it to. That pic I posted was no taller then stock but could out wheel all kinds of trucks with piles of mods. Lift gets you a bit of clearence and thats it. plus the way lots of people lift trucks they loose flex not gain it. 2" springs alone will destroy the flex of a stock disco yet people do it all the time.

My avatar is 235/85's and a 2" lift

You shouldn't have to trim at all just extend those brackets that retain the rear fenders, push the fender out till it clears your tire I cut mine and kicked myself later not that it matters now with 35's but you need not trim for those tires.

DO NOT USE SPACERS WITH STOCK SPRINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's nothing to do with a "vanity lift," a 2" lift will hardly make his truck a rolling death trap on light hunting trips and will add decent clearance. Cut the sh*t out of your truck and hug the ground, cool with me. We all know it's as much or more about the skills of the driver than simply having lift or blingy bits. Know your truck and what you want to do with it, no argument from me on that point...

I agree with MUSKYMAN 100%. The other poser pics in the gallery when the vehicle was basically stock height really did not show how well it could flex for nearly stock height. I am not 100% sure how much trimming was necessary, as the main thing was to get the protection on it and Rockware bumpers for quarter panel protection required it.

I had no problem with pulling Loveland and Vail pass with 235/85s, just use 3rd. Same even with 255s, 3rd even more.

This is a thread that newbies should really take to heart

Go back and look at that pic of brians truck, the lift actually adds almost no lift at all because the lift height is negated by the weight of the sliders, bumpers and winch.

the only reason for the lift is to carry the weight not raise the truck. This is the best set up for most people IMHO and one of the best ways to run a D1. This yeilds a truck that will go lots of places and will also not tear its self apart.

If you are new to disco's this is about the best way I can think of to start out and learn to off road. You dont need lockers you dont need HD rear shafts or hd Cv's. This simple set up will protect the body and allow you to learn to drive the truck and learn the dynamics of weight transfer and traction.

Almost every newbie that comes on wants to know "what first" that pic is a damn good example of where to go first. there is always time to go with ARB's and all the rest of the candy, but starting low ,safe and simple will actually be alot more fun.

Return those spacers and if you are determined to lift some go with 2" coil lift. Those stock springs on 2" spacers aren't the safest. JMO

FWIW the two best springs are RTE and OME. The RTE will most likely give you more than 2" and the OME will give you around 1.75".

Good Luck,

Mike
