Tappets

I am doing a re-ring/bearing job on my 4.0 engine. I'll probably do a head exchange with an Atlanta machine shop but what about the tappets? Is it a good idea to R&R all of them or can they be inspected or tested for servicablity?

If you are even thinking of replacing the lifters, you should be replacing the cam.

It is false economy to replace the lifters and not the camshaft.

The cam is in pretty good shape but the tappets all have a slight concave surface where it meets the cam. Is this normal?
There is a youtube instruction on how to inspect tappets but the LR ones are not the same.

If the tappets are concave the cam is worn out. They both need to be replaced. Find a 4.6 cam and get a little more power.

What are the consequences of replacing the lifters without replacing the cams?
I replaced all the lifters when I did my head job on my 96 D1 because I was experiencing some tapping sounds during cold starts (lifter rap?). I also replaced both the rocker arm assemblys and pushrods (got a deal on them). Didn't notice any lifter wear. Seemed to fix the problem. I would have replaced the cam but I wasn't sure of my skills to tackle the job. Now you have me wondering what problems may arise. I had 155K mi at the time. Now I have 178K mi. Should I still be concerned?

Its fine if you're sure your cam is ok. If your camshaft is worn, putting in new lifters will only foul those ones up too. Then you'll have to replace your new/now worn lifters and your camshaft. If you've got 20k plus on it since then and haven't experienced an ill effects, then you're probably ok. For people going at it for the first time, make sure your cam is good before you throw away money on new lifters.

Sorry to awaken an old post but this one seems very close to the issues I have just come across.
Did head gaskets a few miles back and decided to use a set of Rhoades lifters i had bought but never used.
Always "ticked" because that's what those lifters do but after a few months of the tick getting progressively worse I opted to change rocker shafts and rocker arms.
The tick continued to get worse and a bad skip started so I suspected a lifter or valve issue. I just took the engine back apart to inspect the lifters and found two totally wiped out lifters, worn worse than I've ever seen in 30 years of working on motors. I had new lifters on hand but they are so bad I am stopping until I find a cam.
Looking for recommendations.
I need:
Cam
Fuel line (because I got over zealous)
Upper heater hoses (nothing gets you in the mood like finding bad lifters then snapping your fuel line)

I have new lifters and upper gaskets.

hello,

i just installed a crower cam on my 4.0l land rover discovery. (2000 model). ive been very pleased with the results. just be sure to call crower and make sure you get the correct stage and model for yours. i did a stage 1 for stock engine and resurfaced my heads and also installed new crower lifters. make sure you do new lifters or others call tappets and the biggest advice is when installing the cam is this.
1) use correct breakin lube on cam and tappets. (not grease, not oil) and absolutley do not push cam in to far(you will pop out rear plug and have to seperate tranny from engine to put new one in. (ask me how i know)
2)make sure you prime oil pump before install, their are different ways but the old faithful is best, pack oil pump with vasoline and fill oil filter fully with oil.
3)take you time, take your time, take your time. download rave manual its a must , hope this helps
