Things to do in Detroit?

I wouldn't go out of my way to go to Dearborn, but if I was in the Detroit area I rather go to Dearborn than Detroit proper.

Dearborn is definitely worth it. I went to a place called Al-Ameer and it was awesome. My mom is Lebanese so I grew up eating raw kibbeh and that's what I ordered. There's not a lot of restaurants where I would eat raw ground beef but a popular Lebanese joint in Dearborn is one of them.

When you're done, you can go down the street to Shatila. The most amazing arab bakery/dessert place I've ever been to. Picture Mike's Pastry in the North End of Boston, only bigger and better.

Say's the man who made my not trust my machete fighting skill, thus not go to Haiti.

An error may have been present in my judgement.

Clearly you are a dangerous man, as you managed to injure me; which is not, in practice, an easy task.

Indeed, you accomplished the act without striking a blow, which is certainly a shame upon me of notable weight.

Recently, I exited my building in a perfectly innocent manner, meaning no harm to any soul, and stubbed my fucking toe on one of your teleporting Houdini buckets.

You obviously possess a powerful magic; exhibited in the confident conspiration to transmit such a great mass instantaneously and without apparent flaw.

I hadn't considered sorcery when calculating the nature of my advice...

Cheers,

Kennith

I lived in MI for the 2000s. My thoughts:

I hate Detroit. Downtown Detroit has had a bit of a comeback the last few years, but it's just a few square blocks. Outside of the Ford Field/Comerica Park area, it's a dump; and it's very easy to get outside of that "safe" area. Think third world country, but worse. I'd stay away from Detroit, as a general rule. Or contemplate suicide...

The suburbs: they are just that. all strip malls. Have to drive everywhere. Maybe Bloomfiled Hills.

Windsor: I was only there during daytime. Felt like a dump too, but safer than The D. They are Canadian after all.

My choice: Go to Ann Arbor. Lot's of bars, restaurants and college chicks....

I get my fill of Lebanese food when I visit my wife's family in Toledo. There's plenty of good Lebanese food there. It's good enough that I don't need to head up to Dearborn.

Agreed.

You guys are a bunch of pussies.

Granted, it may have been because I worked for Dave Bing, but in the early 2000s I traveled to Detroit every week and had a great time and never had a problem.

Marty-Jakobi's Beer Garden, right downtown. Great place, great beer. Last time I was there, the two I was with and I were accosted by a bum and the other guy gave him some money and I told him to get the fuck out of my face. I got in my Disco and went around the corner and was flagged down by a man and woman... As they approached the truck, they saw I had my Model 28 in my hand and the both pulled out badges and complemented me on my dealing with the bum. They then calmly asked if I had an Indiana CHL and told me to enjoy my stay in Detroit.

The Noriguchi (sic) rock scuplture downtown is pretty cool.

Remember that Michigan honors your home state CHL. Don't leave home without it, especially in Detroit.

Tell Dave I said hi!

You all have fragrant weeping vaginas. I had lots of fun in Detroit. Their art museum is amazing. There are a ton of places to eat. I went and ate the raw kibbe at that lesbian place Chris recommended, really cool place. Everyone is actually friendly and helpful. I'm not saying its not rough around the edges but I like it

Marty, you're my hero. Detroit museum of art is indeed fantastic, and the chances for it to remain such are slim. You did very well.

Yeah, Christie's has already came through and "evaluated" it. It's really sad. I went to the Art Institute of Chicago and the Detroit Art Institute 3 days apart. I didn't see all of either of them (as it's impossible in 1 day) but I hit the most interesting stuff and I think I like DIA better. Plus in Chicago its 26 bucks for common folk and 15 for locals. In Detroit its 8 bucks for out of town or free for locals. I hope they come up with some way to keep it at least mostly in tact.
