...If this hole was so freakin bad then why wasnt someone there giving a heads up to people coming along ? Or was this just a blind midnight run ? I dont really care how many people were coming down the trail , you know the bad spots and if you know the vehicles you know which ones are going to have trouble and where. I thought that is what the MARshals were for ?

I believe that an important fact here has been left out of the thread. This happened Wednesday evening, prior to MAR officially opening. The understanding I had was that Daniel, Steve Young and others were running the trails checking conditions before the attendees arrived.

Ron, I don't feel the need to go into depth with a sissy wheeler about the trails I run. Allen can run the same trails as I, but I cannot run same trails as Allen. I was making the point of Crap Happens. Anytime you feel you have the balls to follow my 4x4 club thru the woods, come on. But, dont bring your "water depth" stick or show up worrying about body damage, rollovers, or broken parts, because crap will happen. If you think I'm talking from my ass, pictures can be found at www.sv4w.org or www.virginia4x4.org It may not be a lot of pictures, but you can see we don't take the winnie route either.

Dissecting the replay like armchair quarterbacks doesn't change the fact that sometimes mud, dumb luck, slipping rocks, whatever can significantly change the outcome of your intended line. Why so many folks (or maybe a few?) like to pile on and say what their omnipotent selves would have done is beyond me.

I notice the other fellas on the run (Daniel and myself) and others who have seen the trail (Mike and Bill) aren't criticizing steve. Only you armchair roverers. Bah.

Back to the MAR, and positive things... Mike McCaig: another suggestion discussed tonight at my local Rover Club gathering (armchair rovering at it's finest) was having some orienteering/geocaching events. I thought it was a great idea and wanted to pass it along.

Daniel, I have some photos of your friend Jeff stuck down by the river. I'll pass them along when I get enough time to grab them off the camera.

Correct- it was a "pre-run" before the event.
The funniest part about the whole thing is that arrogant attitude that the invincible dude can do no wrong... his sheeyit doesn't stink.
As for the "follow me to ____" comments... Fine by me. I've already run in places where nobody thought I'd go and showed up some of them fancy redneck rigs. There were loads of Rangies and Discos that couldn't follow me through MAR... not to mention the D90 that got stuck twice trying to follow me back when I was running stock tyres two years ago.
I slipped into a rut- which happens... it was deep and it resulted in a soft roll. so what? I just can't imagine what the big deal is.

I don't think he was being intentionally deceitful but Jeff failed to mention to me he got stuck down by there river as he was tugging me out of that mess. We had a last run of it Sunday afternoon before hitting the hard surface. Daniel, did you perchance see those pics Jeff took?

Just prior to that, we (Jeff, Steve Ware and I) managed to catch a 101 run across the causeway and stroll the island trail.

Steve, Jeff is burning all his pictures to a CD for me, I will get you the good ones ASAP.

Yea, Jeff got stuck on the East river trail, near the trail head of Sidney Slide. He slid into a rut that swallowed his 33's and we had to winch him out. That should make a good picture ;)

Doesnt it though Ian ? :D and "There were loads of Rangies and Discos that couldn't follow me through MAR..." this one here is a classic as well... Certain driving styles can yield great results but just as certain is the fact that you will go from Hero to Zero in about 2.1 seconds when the inevitable comes to visit...

Dogs

Someone mentioned a dog getting hit in the meadow. That's one thing that bothered me, the number of dogs running about out of control. Don't get me wrong, I like dogs, have had them most of my life, but I also believe they aren't people and folks should maintain control of them. I choose not to bring a dog with me, so I wonder about the people who assume I'm fine with a bunch of dogs running aorund and through my campsite. One grabbed a wooden spoon and took off. I saw another take a crap right in front of someone else's (not the owner's) tent so of course all the others nearby had to come and make sure they were the last to mark the spot.

One of the reasons I don't make the extra effort to bring mykids is because of all the dogs running about. My oldest was nearly attacked by a large dog when he was about 2 (the dog was brought up, snarling and barking, about 6" short of my son's face by a chain) and is just now getting over it, but he needs to take dogs on his terms, ie. slowly.
It bothers me that so many dog owners assume everyone else wants their dog in their face.

LOL ;)

Tom Rowe: Ahh, the perennial dog issue. I brought my dog Henry, and never let him roam off leash. He was either on-leash at my side, or in my truck in the back with a dog guard. I never assume people like dogs, or even want them around. More than that, I love my dogs and the environment at MAR is NOT safe for offleash wandering--even if your dog is a good dog (which mine is). Too many trucks around.

There was one dog owner who repeatedly let their labrador wander offleash. He kept bugging Henry and my dog was pissed. The dog followed us 200 yards on a walk, pestering my dog. I let Henry make a stand and the dog didn't bother us anymore. But why should I have had to put my dog, and theirs, in danger because the owner was irresponsible? Grr. I saw a little girl run screaming from that labrador--she could well have had something similar happen to her as your son did.

You know, the great proportion of dog owners there did the right thing. A few bad apples spoil the bunch. I, for one, want the leash rule enforced next year--and that includes the dogs I was told were the property owner's.

Ask anyone around the shantytown area if they enjoyed having my dog around. It can be a very positive thing--but leashes need to be mandatory.

There was one thing that I never did figure out. On the real short trail that led from the farmhouse up around the pond to the field where I was camping, there was something odd in the woods at the end of the trail. It appeared that someone made a makeshift shelter with a couple of tarps and there was a sleeping bag or something laying on the ground. I never saw anyone back there. Did anybody else see this or know what the deal with that was? I thought maybe it was Jason Johnson's location for his generator but I didn't see the generator.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I absolutely don't have a problem with dogs at an event like MAR. What I have a problem with is irresponsible owners.
Actually, I meant to ask Steve what the leash rule was, if any, but there was always something else that took precedence, like those damn freelanders. You know, the one's that suck? :D

(Sorry Steve, couldn't resist)

I brought my dog the first year we attended and she had a great time. But I thought with the rain, and her having to ride around in the back of the truck on rough trails, she'd be happier at my in-laws with her two doggy friends! I saw quite a few dogs loose, but most on leashes. It's still too dangerous for me....and having her there is a bit of a pain to worry about her always being safe, cool, comfortable, watered, fed and having fun!

I left my dogs at home as well- it's too hectic to deal with everything AND the dogs. All dogs were supposed to be leashed and we don't want to ban dogs- but enforcement is an issue. If the owner is nowhere around, what can be done when you see the dogs running around? I don't think anyone had time to round up stray dogs and hang on to them until the owners came looking for them.

Steve- I didn't notice that little campsite... wonder if there's a squatter living out there and wondering where all those boxy trucks came from.

You had no chance, Jeff. You can blame that on Kevin Newell, who created that hole to the left (and the corresponding D90-sized-spot missing from the trail) the day before. :D

The water was quite a bit higher that day, and he couldn't see the "bridge" area, and his passenger got REAL WET.

Also , my dog stayed on leash 99.0% of the time but Joe says that next year no dogs off leash period..there was also a dog fight incident; territorial thing, etc........
