to cap or not to cap oilcooler?

The thread on the output of the Rover sandwich plate is 16mmx 1.5mm straight thread and adpaters from that to male-JIC are available without too much effort. Makes for a neat install with no crazy bullshit.

Trans coolers are a bit different to adapt though.

Bill

One must be careful with the fittings to the oil filter housing/adapter as some variations have a goofy fitting that extends into the housing and one can't just use an adapter to change the fitting to JIC (well, I suppose they could be, but I'd not wanna take a chance with my oil lines).

Why are trans coolers any different? I haven't had a bit of a problem with replacing them with hose barbs, etc.

I like the compression fittings as they can be installed in situ. Also, some radiators will allow you to remove the fittings and replace them with pipe fittings to hose barbs directly.

Paul - guess I've never run across an oil cooler plate that was any different. The one piece adapters with a bonded sealing washer always worked for me. Thanks

For trans coolers I cut off the hard line about 1" below the female nut and then weld on the JIC male adapters. The trans cooler itself is one piece so it seems the simplest way to leave it stock. Don't personally care for the "bumped tube" fittings, but stuck with them in that one spot.

I've used flareless compression fitings too and they work well for those that don't/can't weld. I just like the JIC better because they are more common and simple to connect/disconnect.

Bill

PS - sleeve the oil cooler lines in silicone/fiberglass firesleeve - they'll last much longer no matter if you use stock lines or not.

Wanna bet?

I have a 2004 Disco in right now...the oil cooler line locations on the front cover are plugged from the factory...and only a trans cooler between the rad. and A/C condensor...looks like no oil cooler to me...strange

Randy - guess so - it's on my mind because I've got a complete set of trans lines already converted sitting on my office floor because we're converting John B's trans lines this weekend. We did hose oil cooler lines a couple years ago.

No Rover still - but can't leave the fold I guess - LOL

Paul

I wish Kyle would come back- hell I'd get another Rover just to hang out and watch the fireworks.

Paul - yes they exist - Gates series X-XMFA (x's represent dash size) Available -4 through -16

Granted there may be SOME 4.6s that don't have oil coolers, but to make such a broad blanket statement is wrong! (apologies to Perrone Ford and Brian Bonner).

Case in point, 4.6 P38s had oil coolers.

LOL, in spite of my arguments with Kyle and his banning me, he did show some kindness to me.

My local hydraulic shop claims that no one makes a hose barb fitting mating to a compression fitting without first going through a pipe fitting. I'll see what I can find-thanx!!!

A quick look at the parts book and I agree...no 4.6 discos had coolers...seems like they would need them...weird...back to the topic....dont bypass your cooler, fix it the PT way...way cheaper and less leaky

Be nice to Larry, he's probably suffering from culture shock having recently moved to the land of Liberals and rain.

I just moved from the land of the liberals so that's no real change. And oddly it has rained very little since we've been here. Most importantly NO SNOW!!!!

Do you happen to have an oil temp gauge in your truck?...I am wondering how much more oil temp it has now...but then again it's still cold outside...I guess it would be more of a summer issue.

Hi PT....I meant that no 4.6 Discos got Oil Coolers from the factory...P38s are discussed on another board so I wasn't even thinking about that. What would you recommend fitting to a 2004 Disco? Haven't looked that closely, but would I have to change the front cover or just remove plugs from the oil filter housing and go from there?

The easiest way would probably be to get the plate from an early RRC as it just screws onto the oil filter fitting and provides cooling line ports. I'm not sufficiently aware of the finer points of the 4.6 front covers to address it with any degree of confidence.
