Valium Question

I was at my doctor's office a few weeks ago getting a pinched ulnar nerve diagnosed, when the conversation turned to our upcoming trip to San Diego for a family reunion on my wife's side. I mentioned how much anxiety I get when flying. So my doctor prescribed some Valium to reduce my stress. My question is what should I expect, how long does it last and how soon before stress should I take it? And flying is really not my gig. I'm also afraid of snakes and heights, call me a pansy all you want, I'm fine with that.

For flying which is quick, relatively speaking, why wouldn't you take Xanax, it goes to work faster but doesn't last as long.

I don't take anything but I know about some of these anxiety meds so I could be way off with your needs.

I've had some close calls with snakes. Flying can be harrowing as well, some times, but for me mostly it's at the airport.

From here to San Diego is two flights of about 2 1/2 hours each. The same on return. Dr. gave me eight 5mg tabs of Diazepam (Valium?) presumably two for each plane ride. I am not a good airport/airflight person, marginally better than John Lithgow's character in the Twilight Zone movie. I have no experience with sedatives. I'm curious about what will happen if I take a couple of these and then knock back a couple of gin and tonics. I want to be relaxed, not comatose.

.50mg zannex 1 hr before takeoff. 1 double of bourban 15 min before wheels up. I guarantee you will have a great flight.

...ah yes. "Better living through chemistry" have been my watchwords since the '60s. Sounds like the voice of experience. :)

But you could always do something weird, like add tequila to pharmacology...and end up like your avatar.

Cheers

His doctor probably started him on the Diazepam (Valium) because its not as strong as Alprazolam (Xanax). I could def see him putting him on a low dosage of the Xanax, just depends. Hell it could be what his favorite rep was pushing him this month. They are both benzo's though.

On a closely related note, never pay for drinks on a plane. Go the liquor store before you leave and buy a stack of those "airplane" bottles, you can even get the 100ml ones some places sell. As long as it is under 3 oz they should let you on. I avoid glass ones so they don't complain about that. When I went to the Philippines I brought 5 50ml bottles of Basil Haydens and 5 50 ml bottles of Tanqueray. Once you are on the plane just be discreet about it. Beats the devil out of paying 5 bucks for jim beam

they work well for football games as well. The whole sleeve with some duct tape does the trick. Or a platypus.

x2 - If you have had a problem with depression, please be careful with either.

Finally something I can answer!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
ok just take it when you get to the airport, it will help with the stress of security lines and what not plus you won't be tooo loopy once the flight is over.. If it is you're first time it will probably knock you out. Chances are you won't remember the flight at all. OH and once again if its your first time and you don't want to be comatose or make an ass out of yourself be very careful with the booze. On bezos (benzodiazepam) the effects of alcohol are 2-3 times stronger at least. Hell you might love flying after this trip :p

What he said.
Don't drink when you're taking meds like this.
You won't know until you arrive in SD if you're OK to drive.
Might want to have tentative arrangements for someone else to pilot your vehicle.

I feel your pain Rick. I haven't flown in probably 12 years or so and missed many vacation opportunities because of my fear of flying. The last time I flew I took a valium (can't remember the dosage) when I got the airport, and had a margarita while waiting to board. It worked for me.

As far as the Valium went, I took one 5mg about an hour before take off and had a couple of drinks, then took another about 20 minutes before take off and it didn't work. In fact I had the worst panic attack I've ever had. Take off is the worst part. I took a couple more before the end of the first flight, and then had a couple more drinks on the second flight and that made it marginally better. I think I'm going to try to get a few more and up the dose on the return flights. If that does not help, my flying days will be behind me.

It is cool to be back in San Diego. It never ceases to amaze me how nice the weather is here. It's a beautiful day here and we have been re-visiting some of our old stomping grounds. Lots of Rovers here.

I feel your pain, last year was the first time I had flown since pre 9/11 and the valium didnt work either but I took my clonazapam and it worked so it really depends on your body chemistry. Good luck.
