yeah I agree but the 10 spline stuff has the funky cv and spindle so I just dont see anyone going through that hassle when 24 spline stuff is so cheap.

I know how to engage the CDL wrench style but want to take a look at it when I get the truck back here and see if it has been engaged all along. I would post the picture but I'm getting the "you've reached the max of 20 attachments" message when I try, so please take a look at this link:

http://www.landroverclubvi.com/2003cdlinstall.html

The 2nd photo down the page shows a red arrow. My reading is that in that photo the CDL unlocked and you turn the direction of the red arrow to engage the CDL. Am I right?

BTW, I'm not sure whose website that is but the link is a great write up on the CDL.

Update:

Got to work on it today and as most guessed the rear diff was shot. I was happy to find 24 spline stuff in the "bastard" truck.. I would attach pics but it still won't let me. Any free photo host work well with discoweb?

The spider gears were floating around and very torn up. Lots of metal chunks in the oil. Inspected both rear axle shafts (both good) and installed a used diff.

Disassembled and inspected front drivers side and the CV and axle looked fine.

Disassembled and inspected front passenger axle and it had sheared right before the hump/lip where the diameter changes. I got lucky and found a full set of stock 24 spline disco axles in a local shops trash parts pile and installed a new axle.

It turns out the CDL was engaged the whole time, the nipple was turned towards the passenger side of the vehicle, like the arrow in the picture link I posted above? I had probably been driving with the shot rear diff since wheeling about a month ago.

Oh, man! Nice.

I think any pic sites will work.

The front axle:

I wonder how the transmission handled all that force? Well it didn't. When I refilled the swivel balls today and backed out of the spot where I was working it has no forward gear. Reverse is fine but no drive. When the axles were broken the drive shafts would free spin when the transmission was in drive. Now they don't spin at all (probably because they are under a load). You can feel the rover trying to move forward but it doesn't.

I spoke with a local LR and BMW guy that lets me use space at his shop. BMW's use the ZF transmission also. He put money on it being the "forward drive gear aka direct drive" and showed me this:

So now I'm shopping show a cheap ass used transmission to swap in, I'll contact all the usual suspects over the next few days. This is suposed to be a trail toy but by the time I'm done it looks like I'll have swapped axles, diffs, the motor, and now the tranny.

The local guy mentioned that he knows theses well and could crack and inspect a used tranny in a hour or so and make sure the direct drive is in good shape.

Here are some bad photos of the truck:

Damn, you're the second one here in a week with a torn up ZF !?!

I thought these transmissions were pretty tough??

The first gear clutch pack is usually what goes. Just remember to NEVER rev the engine once the tranny has been engaged. Im thinking when he broke the rear diff, the engine reved and killed the first gear clutch pack. Happened to me once when I popped into neutral in a stuck hole. Sucks but they are cheap used. Dont even bother trying to rebuild it. Gordo
BTW been in the FLRC for about 10 yrs and dont remember this truck. Not saying it wasnt wheeling but I dont remember it being at any events. Gordo
