Viscous Fan Alignment/Wobble

Driving home from work tonight I started to notice a knocking sound coming form the engine. It seemed to be intermittent (went away at speed) but was constant at rest.
Upon further inspection, it was obviously coming from the fan area. Removal of the shroud revealed that the fan was making contact with the top hose/clamp where it connects to the manifold outlet pipe. It does seem like there is a bit of a wobble to the fan when pressure is applied. Regardless of the play, the fan seems to come real close to the hose.

Other threads indicate a few possibilities including water pump, fan clutch, etc but not necessarily a recommended order for troubleshooting. Seems like the majority of comments cite the water pump so I wanted to throw this out there for some recommendations. If the water pump is the first thing to try, I haven't gotten the impression that the job is overly difficult or time consuming.

Thanks in advance.

x3 on water pump
Simple job to replace. Just make sure that you have the right tools for the job...... ie spanner to remove fan.
Might aswell do your thermostat and flush the cooling system while you are there. ;)

Grab ahold of the fan at the top, rock it fore/aft. Does the fan move independently of the water pump hub?

Now, remove the belt and do the same and check to see if the water pump hub is moving.

It is not uncommon to remove the belt and find the water pump has much more play with the tension of the belt released.

I've got water pumps in stock for $100 shipped. Fan clutches as well.

Thanks for the input everybody. . . seems as though I'm headed in the right direction.

@PT. . .no, rocking the fan seems to move the pulley (hub?) along with it. I would think that would seem to indicate that the problem is with pump?

Project follow-up. . .

Ok, the new water pump is in. Worst part was cleaning off the previous gasket. Talk anbout a knucle-buster!! :p

Anyway, all is back together and she looks and sounds great. However, there's a little problem. I noticed that i now have no heat coming into the cabin. Thought it might have been heater core so i flushed it but still nothing.

Any ideas on this? I topped off with coolant per the RAVE manual but I'm thinking i might have an airpocket someplace?

Hello Gents, I found this thread whilst performing a search. It seems I too may be replacing my water pump in the next couple of days. The fan is making a racket, and upon further inspection and removal of the belt, the pulley is quite wobbly and metal filings are all around the rear of the same.

1) Would any of you know the size spanner required to remove the fan assembly?
2) Mr PT, are you still stocking the pumps?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I'll be in touch. Not sure yet what I'll require until I take it apart this weekend.
