Driving home from work tonight I started to notice a knocking sound coming form the engine. It seemed to be intermittent (went away at speed) but was constant at rest.
Upon further inspection, it was obviously coming from the fan area. Removal of the shroud revealed that the fan was making contact with the top hose/clamp where it connects to the manifold outlet pipe. It does seem like there is a bit of a wobble to the fan when pressure is applied. Regardless of the play, the fan seems to come real close to the hose.
Other threads indicate a few possibilities including water pump, fan clutch, etc but not necessarily a recommended order for troubleshooting. Seems like the majority of comments cite the water pump so I wanted to throw this out there for some recommendations. If the water pump is the first thing to try, I haven't gotten the impression that the job is overly difficult or time consuming.
Thanks in advance.
