I decided it was time for a frontal assault on the dash rattles and squeaks that have developed over 173k miles, so I replaced the center bezel with a spare that I had. I knew most of the noise was coming from that since it had multiple cracks. However, I was really surprised to find that the metal radio support bracket that is riveted into the back of the dash above the HVAC box was broken loose and had a huge hole in the plastic behind it. I suppose some gorilla couldn't be bothered to line up the radio correctly at least once in the past and just stuffed it in there once upon a time.
Now that it is fixed, the airflow from the dash vents is better - always a benefit when it's in the 90s with 80%+ humidity. I even found enough of the broken tabs from the center bezel to repair the original one so I'm back to having a usable spare again.
When fixing the broken speedo bezel I saw that the speedo cluster was only held in with 2 of the 4 screws so that quieted down the rattles from there nicely.
The PS suction line that was a piece of heater hose (wtf?) got replaced so that all the PS fluid would stop oozing from it and a set of brand new tranny cooler lines from the parts truck replaced the original (2/94 date code) lines nicely. No more seeping trans fluid.
So nice to drive with no more dash rattles!
