Used to be self-employed. Had a fairly good practice, offering landscape architecture and land planning services as a subconsultant to other deisgn professionals, such as civil engineers and architects. Didn't have insureance, though, and that got to be a real burden. Finally gave it up to take a position with the State of Kansas that offered good benefits, including insurance.

I own a marine restoration and repair business. X-treme Marine, Inc. I specialize in classic fiberglass speedboats; Glastrons, Allisons, Donzis, Formulas, Cigarettes, and the like. But do maintenance on anything fiberglass, from bass boats to Sportfishermen. I only astarted the business a few years ago, so to pay the bills I still have a full time job, also. I am the head of quality control at Novurania of America. The world's largest manufacturer of tenders for superyachts and megayachts.

I am the co-founder and administrator of a foster family agency. We recruit, identify, and train families to be foster parents. Child protective services calls us for placement of abused children. I love my job. I get to tell master degree level social workers what to do and play basketball with kids.:victory:

What is your take on CPS? Here in Oregon we have them telling us teachers things like, "...we cannot investigate this matter further [obvious child abuse and possible drug use] because the family in question is classified as below the poverty line, and there is at least one immigrant in the house. We advise that you drop the matter and not attempt to report it again."

Glad to see someone likes their job dealing with these poor kids. I am surprised at the trashy people who work in CPS and the foster care system who act like they hate kids -- go figure.

Well...I used to work for CPS and busted my butt working my caseload. That is the main problem right there...no one WORKS their caseload. They just sit back and tell the biological parents to go here or there and attend this, turn in the certificate. No one takes the time to make sure they actually learned something and can put it into practice. I reunified EVERY family that came across my caseload. To my knowledge, only two ever came back into the system.

One thing to remember is that CPS is governed by County counsel's interpretation of the State's Welfare & Institution Codes. Plus, the judges interpretation also comes into play. Then add in county politics. Most CPS workers are dismayed, disgruntled, and just seem to "exist" at their job.

Seems like your system in Oregon needs to be overhauled. My agency is geared towards changing the system for the better by treating people with respect while at the same time expecting more from them. We pay our social workers more and expect more from them. We reimburse our families more and expect more from them. In return, the kids get more and the counties get more bang for their buck. We are VERY picky about who we certify to be parents with our agency. If we feel someone is doing it for the money, we tell them to go elsewhere.

OK, I'll get off my soapbox...:victory:

I was in the software dev business from 88-2005, pretty much self-employed the whole time and focused on the Property & Casualty side of the insurance biz. I still do some very smallish consulting gigs every now and then for some friends who are still in the biz, but I'm looking for a new path to travel these days. My specialty was reinsurance. I'm not cynical about insurance. :D

Lately, I've been working construction, helping rebuild rover motors (2.25s and V8s), doing some very minor farming and logging, spent about 3 months off and on taking care of a family member as their days came to an end.

Not sure what to do next, I'm hoping to be a stay-at-home dad one of these days... :)

Good for you Steven! What an amazing job to have. I have often thought about Foster Care (once I get a more normal schedule), and have been a huge supporter and Big Sister of BBBS for the past five years. I think often times (we) do not realize the impact that (we) have on children especially through the early teen years (10-15). I always kid Melissa (my little sister through BBBS) that she will inherit one of the rovers when she turns 16, and if I never have kids then she will be "my kid". You are great!

Job= O&G Atty not self-employed but with a recent investment I hope to be owner/operator of an independent oil and gas firm within the next few years.

Real estate appraiser - commercial, industrial and special-purpose properties like shipyards, airports and railroads. Half of the work is litigation valuation, meaning that it is headed to court for one reason or another, like eminent domain acquisition.

Founder and President of Sierra Vista Realty, Inc. in Southern California. I chose to go independent because many of the franchises were "hollow" offices. There was no real training or support for the agents; basically "there's your desk and good luck." I believe in continued education for my agents to keep us ahead of the market and the competition. My Corporate office is in Glendora, CA and we have branches in Pasadena, Lancaster, and Fresno. I am looking to branch out into other states as well.
I love the business and couldn't imagine doing anything else. I get such a rush from watching new agents become successful, seasoned pros.
And of course I am always trying to work the Rover into advertising.
