I agree it will get a total re fit, but will we like it? It seems like the trend is for more plastic, which is not always bad but not what you want to see. I would just like them to go back to their basics with at least one model a no frills expedition grade 4 wheeler. Wouldn't there be some distinction in that. Also it would lend some off road crediability to the more civil models. Look at what the military hummer did for the H2 and they don't even compare. For the sake of the brand name Land Rover the Defender needs to be the off road benchmark even though it will not appeal to as many people except us. :smash:

As for the Freelander it must have been built for the econo minded nitch market. They should have known better to compeat with GM for the cheap 4x market (Chevy Trailblazer).

I think such a rig would appeal to a lot of people. Look how many Jeep Wranglers you see driving around!:ack:

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the new Defender was available in both solid axel and IFS becasue they will still be producing these vehicles for the British military, right? I doubt the military wants or cares about road mannors. The problem is that the only version LR will send to the US will be a luxery version. Oh well.

Land Rover may supply the military with some vehicles now but I believe the contract was awarded to Pinzgauer a few years ago.

none of your fucking business
everybody read what I wrote at the beginning...we dont want them here. Or every snot nosed kid with loaded parents will be cruising around beating the trash out of a defender. I work very hard to maintain my Disco, and having some guy who didnt have to work for it cruise by me in a defender would piss me off to no end.

Land Rover IS selling more vehicles now, my point was that they are selling LESS vehicles than brands like Honda or GM who purposely manufacture low-cost vehicles but hope to sell sh*t loads to make their money on quantity. Even "cheap" SUV's have higher mark-up than cars, LR is going one step further and making only luxury SUV's - a perfect high-mark-up field.

To maintain their image (and profit margin), they can't have "low-cost trucks here. Look at what happens when an affordable brand releases an expensive vehicle - the dismal VW Phaeton, nice ride, but it's a Volkswagen - people with that kind of money don't feel they get the image they deserve for the price. LR has been pushing luxury in the US forever (unlike the mixed use message in the rest of the world), just don't see that changing ESPECIALLY now that they are selling more trucks...

What's wrong with more people having Defenders? The way it is now, the only people that can afford them are the snot nosed kids with loaded parents.

The thing I find promising, a brand spanking new Defender 110 Diesel in the UK is cheaper than the new LR2. $35 g's US Dollar for a UK Defender. Sure would bring down the value of a 14 yr old truck. No wonder US Defender owners don't want them over here.

That statement makes a lot of sense.
It does if you read it jack ass. Do you see many people that actually care about LR driving Defenders? I've been looking for one on the internet and the vast majority of the ones for sale are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. Like $35k for a truck with 70k miles. They're getting so expensive that the only people that can afford them are not going to ever take them off the pavement.

The defender is dead in North America, if you read the article in LRL by the president, The Defender only sold 6944 trucks total in all of the 90's. It would cost millions of RD to get a truck here thats acounts for less then a % of its gross sales. Its like Italy re-engineering the Farrai for the phillipines.......so those over priced rebadged disco and RRC will alure us all, but notice how many are for sale, and nobody is really buying them at those prices

Amen. I'd probably rather have snot nosed kids with them than the snot nosed adults that have them now (heck, I've even spoken with snot nosed Defender businesses. Not, of course, referring to any that may be anywhere near me ;) )

Bring them back in the mid-20k range so real enthusiasts can get them, send the prices of the old ones right into the toilet, and we'll all go down to Copley Motorcars and have a good laugh.

How many Defenders were available in the US? I don't know exactly, but I'm sure it was a limited number. And ok, so nobody's buying them at those prices. Sweet. Now the only people that have them don't want them.

They only imported a limited number. More would have sold if more had been imported. I dont think LR ever intended to sell the Defender for any length of time in the US. It was more a marketing gimmick to get people interested in the image and lifestyle, then pull the old switch-a-roo and end up only selling the RR and Disco.
