I think its odd that this discussion is in the LR3 forum

True enough. But truth be told, all land rover enthusiast want a Defender. If LR sold them here now, I'd run to the dealership and get rid of my LR3 in a heartbeat.

You maybe the only one of few.

Fact is everybody wants defender but no one will spend their money to buy one. That is the reason it is no longer here. LR could not sell it. Now it is gone. Truly, how many people will go out and buy one if it were available at the dealership? What's stopping them from buying one now. There are very clean d-90's for sale all the time.

Big difference between getting a brand new vehicle under warranty and getting a 10 year old clean one for twice the price. For me, anyway.

when they were new in 94 and 95 dealers couldnt give them away, and at $30k back then, for a vehicle with no roof, i can see why. the 97s sold much better as they were somewhat more civil. it wasnt until they were pulled that demand really grew. this discussion is the epitomy of beating a dead horse.. and clean 90s are getting harder and harder to find.

How much are new ones going for in other countries? Anyone know?

I know this is all speculative, but if they sold them new in the U.S. in the $30s that wouldn't be bad at all.

Welllll, I'd have to substitute "many" for "all" as well as inserting "think they want" in your statement.

Yes, the D90 Sw at our house is a garage queen, it covered a whole 6k miles in 2006 and hasn't been off pavement for literally years.

It's fun to have, easy to work on, completely uncomfortable for highway use and ridiculously innefficient with fuel ... I did drive it to the post office yesterday.

Hell no, I won't sell it :)

I'll drive the pansie assed Mazda to work, keep the beat up Disco for off-road playtime, and enjoy the only vehicle in my garage that isn't (currently) depreciating in value at a silly rate.

Oh, wait. Neither the Protege or the Disco are depreciating any more ... they're at residual valu anyway :smilelol:

All I can say is lucky you.

Indeed "lucky" is the operative word here. Three years ago my lovely wife called and said she saw a "Red Rover with a White top" for sale - right here in Des Moines of all places! - and she thought we should take it for a drive :bigok:

I am indeed a lucky dog.

By the way-- they've released pics of the new Bummer. Looks like all road and no dirt is a safe place for gm to play (at least gm thinks so) The thing maybe has four or five actuall metal pieces. Diff covers look like thin aluminum but they way they cast them makes them look like plastic. Body panels ARE plastic.. Think---even worse H3-(didnt think that was possible).

-little off topic here but-
Last sunday we had a smart-ass rich kid think his h3 was the shit and took it wheelin. broke an axle and rolled it and motor mounts went out about 5 minutes into the trail. A STOCK disco made it all the way with us with no problems whatsoever, and it had 3 kids in it. Ill try to get on later and post pics of the H3.

Here is a bit of news for all you guys. I caught wind of this and believe this is certainly going to kill any chances for a defender to be brought into the US. Honestly guys, the only people that want defenders are us...The enthusiast. We are the people that go to events, are friends with the dealership, are constantly on Dweb looking at Defender links wether or not we own one. Sorry, that was a bit of a rant but here is my point: Mahindra. Mahindra is scheduled to release a light, All wheel drive utility truck that has become popular in Africa and Asia. This company is trying to find a demand in the US. Wether or not they are welcomed with open arms or not I dont know. But, this is the same company that built Jeeps under a contract with Willys for Asian markets. They have been doing this for a long time and I see a threat on our beloved icon. Take a gander around www.Mahindra.com, I found the E-Brochure most helpful when looking for pictures of their new ute. Now, I think these trucks are ugly as shit in a bowtie but, they are definatly a competitor in this market.

Q. Why Land Rover will not bring back the Defender to USA

A. It doesn't meet US crash specs without a complete redesign.

Now where is my dead horse smiley!?! :ack:

Although I agree with flip about the LR buyers these days being mainly enthusiasts; especially in the used Defender market, I can't see Mahindra taking a market share. Their SUV looks like a upscaled Suzuki xl-7. Their are lots od cute-utes out there, but they don't interfere with LR sales. And finding a US market, and dealer network is not that easy. Does anybody remember the ARO's from the early 90's. With Ford drivetrain, and they did not even make it.

At your mom's
I went to the LRNA website a few weeks back and they asked if i'd be willing to take a survey of my website experience. They were ripped a new one for not listing the Defender. I don't expect any kind of reply, but if there was a way to channel our energy towards FoMoCo, we might get an answer.

i'd certainly pay 58k for a 130" defender, since i've considered buying the RRS...
