Ok, cool so mostly stocker friendly established routes, camping adventure. Bring the tripod, cameras, dogs, GF, lots of water, food, grill, hiking boots mebbe even mtn bikes that kinda trip. Sounds awesome. If theres room for a truck, thats all country I'd love to explore.

wasnt sure how 'rubicon-esque' a route it was gonna be, where wheeling is the main thing for most of the day- thank you for clarifying

On the topic of the trip, could someone familiar with the area give me an idea of elevations and what the weather is usually like in that area that time of year? Cold nights? Wondering if I'm going to need my winter gear for overnights down there. Despite being "spring" mornings are still brutally cold up here in mid April at anything over 5k feet.

Gem, you really need to read the entire thread carefully. It will clear some things up for you, especially re: dogs, guests, and routes.

For the rest, here's the deal. The degree of difficulty and equipment requirements are going to depend on who shows up. It's a come-one-come-all trip and I don't want to exclude anyone by setting an equipment requirement. That said, if we end up with a group of well-equipped trucks, you can bet that we're going to see some challenging trails.

The only equipment we can't compromise on is recovery points. You must have strong front and rear recovery points so we can winch/yank you if necessary. I'm a Defender owner so I can only speak for them: you'll need something stronger than the stock tie-down points. If you're not sure about this requirement, speak up and we can help.

The most important thing you'll need is a truck that runs well and is well-maintained. At times, we will be 200+ miles from the nearest mechanic. You're looking at a $1,000+ tow and days of lost time if we can't fix a breakdown on the trail. Please do your friends a favor and don't bring a total-pile-of-shit truck on this trip.

I will be bringing the usual Defender spares, along with a good set of tools, including air tools. Disco owners will want to bring appropriate spares for their trucks.

Elevations will range from around 4,000' down by the lake, up to 9,000'+ on Elk Ridge and in the Henrys if we go there. The route will depend on weather conditions. We'll try to avoid a Schlacht von Stalingrad; we'll stick to the low routes if the snow is deep up high.

April weather can vary wildly. I'm bringing winter camping gear just in case.

Ok, so roll call;

Who's in?

Good call, Ben.

I would like to have a list of committed folks NLT February 1st so I can put in for permits ASAP.

I've been working on possible route options. I'd like to come up with a few "unknown" routes pulled from old USGS maps for us to try. These are old mining roads that look interesting but may no longer exist. If they don't pan out, I intend to have some backup options just in case.

Also, is anybody familiar with firearm regulations in Southern Utah? I would like to do some shooting if y'all are game.

Chris, yeah, saw where you wrote "Also keep in mind that dogs are not allowed in some areas." I read that as they need to stay in the truck,or on leash, just like in Canyonlands when I take them.

If there is clearly a no dog policy,i.e. no one else is bring theirs, thats not a huge obstacle for me, but more to it on my end to plan, and more likely I would leave the misses with the pooches at home for this jaunt, and try to sync up with others who may be coming up from AZ.

I'm in with a guest and former D2 owner who's flying out from Virginia on Tuesday the 10th and flying back Tuesday the 17th. I'm more of a "just get out and explore" kind of guy. If a road looks interesting, let's take it and see where it goes.

Frank, are you on Facebook? I have some route-related ideas that I wanted to share with a couple of you.

So, we have the following trucks:

Ben Little
Jason Rose
Bill Gill + guest
Peter Matusov
Frank Rafka
Geri Carbonello
Chris Snell

This is going to be one hell of a trip. I've been spending my free moments on Google Maps satellite view and have some sweet spots picked out.

I think that meal plans are kind of lame but if anybody wants to volunteer to cook a feast for the crowd one evening, you're certainly welcome to. I figure that everyone should just count on bringing their own food and we can always do a communal BBQ grill.

I'm pretty sure that we'll have at least several Engle/ARB fridges for keeping meats and veggies cold. Does anybody have a big dutch oven? I plan on bringing a single-burner stovetop and Snow Peak grill but if you have a two-burner or one of those BBQ grates that sit over a campfire, that might be good to bring.

Finally, who amongst us does not have a ham radio license? I think most of us are licensed and have radios for on-trail commo

Negatory on the ham radio. I can grab a CB though. I usually just communicate through a series of grunts, clicks, and whistles.

I have a couple over-the-fire grates and also a 2-burner but last time I checked I had misplaced the damn valve that connects the fuel canister to the grill. I'll have to see if I can find a replacement (or just buy another).

Total: 10 pax, which is two shy of the maximum allowed for Cedar Mesa permits.

A couple of notes:

- Since I wasn't clear about this before, due to BLM restrictions, no dogs are allowed on this trip, sorry.

- Is everybody good with meeting up around lunchtime on the 12th? It would be nice to meet in Moab and caravan down but that's tough on the folks coming from AZ and CA. I think Blanding, UT would be a more central meeting place, plus it's close to our first destination (Cedar Mesa).

- I plan on staying the night of the 11th in Moab or Montrose, if the UT and ID guys want to meet up.

- Because of our group size, we're going to have to register for a Cedar Mesa BLM group permit in advance. The fee is $8.00 per person. I'm going to call the Monticello office and make sure that permits are available. If that works out, I'll take up a PayPal collection for the permit fee.
