For Removal:

Take a Large cresent wrench or normal wrench, the longer the better. Next find a mallet/hammer (dead blow preferred) and whack the wrench to the left (counterclockwise). Unless its the original clutch it should loosen within a few whacks. A small dab of anti-sieze on the new part will allow easier removal in the future should it be needed.

...So, will the same fan clutch from a D1 fit my D2?

Thanks, Chuck

Yes it will and fwiw I was BS'n with Brandon yesterday and I brought up this thread. I asked him if he'd done the fan clutch swap mentioned in this thread. He said yes and opened his hood to show me. He used the xxx58 and it make a fair amount of noise and created some serious wind. I told him I was thinking I should make the swap too. I commenced to open my hood and reached down and spun the fan. It damn near free wheeled! His eyes got wide open as did mine. I started the engine and he reached down and stopped the fan with his finger. It was shot. What timing. I run my DII in auto AC most of the time so I guess my electric fan was carrying all the cooling weight. I left and bought the 58 and some M10x1.5x16mm bolts (shortest I could find) and some lock washers. I just installed the new one and it goes exactly as this thread says. I ran it for quite some time and my electrics aren't even kicking on. This is an insidious failure. All that read this check your fans/clutch out. I used to get a roar when I started and not until yesterday did I realize I wasn't hearing that anymore. Thanks again Dweb for saving us money once more. Thanks Brandon for sticking your finger in my fan:p

Cheers,

Mike

Did this saturday morning. THANKS for all the part #'s, this little fix is great. Ambient outdoor temp 80 degrees, after warm up, idled for 15 minutes with front and rear air on. IR thermometer says 176 degrees at the T-Stat housing, 156 at the bottom RAD hose...nice! FWIW my truck sounds like a NUKE Submarine at flank speed but its all good.

Alrighty. I got the strap wrench thing. Tried it. Couldn't get the nut to loosen whatsoever. Got a pipe wrench and I'm going to try this later today. This is aggrevating.

Also, the pulley, with the serpentine belt removed, does it have any type of wiggle/play? Can't find anything on it.

12" long 2x6, a big metric cresent hammer, ONE good smack to the left and Robert was my mothers brother. It took longer to break loose the four original bolts holding the fan on the old clutch than the rest of the job. I think I could put the truck in neutral now and just rev the engine for forward motion

My truck is a 2000, but I would assume the 03-04 would be the same. It is a little tighter to get the big nut off than the Gems, but the clutch works just the same. With the DII or Bosch you'll need to remove the belt (or at least I did). I used a rubber strap wrench on the pulley and whacked it once and she came right off.

Mike

You should be able to get it via mail from Advance autoparts. See if RockAuto has it on their web site, if they do, AdvanceAuto.com will match the price. Don't know if they will do the free shipping to canada, like the do in the US.

You are suggesting Rockauto for anything?:smilelol:

(I'm still trying to get Affinia to pay me to straighten that mess out, but they want me to do it for nothing, along with straightening out some other Rover stuff).

Mudhen-what the Hell are you talking about-a one piece unit? The fan clutches are the same for all serpentine belted Rovers. I have put the alternate clutch on '94 DIs and '02 P38s and many, many, many DIIs.

Tony-lemme know, my price is pretty good and I can ship it to you, no problem.

Cheers,
PT

Don't know anything about anything other than my '03 and my '95. My '03 had a one piece unit. No way to separate the center metal part from the outter fan blade part.

I can take a pic of the one I pulled out if you'd like.

You're saying on yours there aren't 4 cap screws holding the fan to the clutch?

Exactly. This is what mine looked like:

One side.

And the other.

See that Schram...maybe you didn't have to be such a dick.

I stand corrected! Please accept my apologies. A quick check of the parts catalog reveals that for '04, the 4.6 came with a different fan/clutch arrangement. That said, it is interchangeable with the earlier models.

Just get the fan that goes with the alternate clutch and you'll be golden.

Replaced my old viscous with the autozone torqflo severe duty viscous, and it works like a champ. With my old one on, driving on the streets and freeways the temp was normal, I took it up a mountain trail the other day, (North off the Palm exit off the 215 in san berdoo), and within 10 minutes it was overheating, I had already did the headgaskets and thermostat, and had the radiator rodded out, so the viscous was the next logical replacement. Hope that helps out with anybody elses overheating problem.

I finally got my old one removed today because the asshole that had rented the autozone fan clutch wrench set finally returned it. Alas... nothing in the set worked. Took it to a really old guy in town. He couldn't get it to work. Eventually we used one of the fan clutch wrench's end with the 1/2" drive hole in it to put around one of the nuts sticking out of the pulley and had it positioned so that it wouldn't turn the nut and used that to hold it in place. 3 whacks with the hammer on the pipe wrench and off it came. Didn't have a drill for the fan so I had to drive the truck back 3 miles to home with the fan and clutch off. Quite a quiet ride.

One final question regarding this whole deal though. The original disco fan doesn't fit properly to the fan clutch. I would think that this would cause it to potentially be off balance once you drill the holes bigger. So has anybody had issues with this? What about using a fan built for the hayden 2786? Any ideas if they fit into a 98 Discovery and where to get them?
