Read part of it my my attention span now is lame, I will have a look tomorrow. Seems like the nature.com.
This stuck out though:
"We detected coronavirus in respiratory droplets and aerosols in 3 of 10 (30%) and 4 of 10 (40%) of the samples collected without face masks, respectively, but did not detect any virus in respiratory droplets or aerosols collected from participants wearing face masks, this difference was significant in aerosols and showed a trend toward reduced detection in respiratory droplets (Table 1b). For influenza virus, we detected virus in 6 of 23 (26%) and 8 of 23 (35%) of the respiratory droplet and aerosol samples collected without face masks, respectively. There was a significant reduction by wearing face masks to 1 of 27 (4%) in detection of influenza virus in respiratory droplets, but no significant reduction in detection in aerosols (Table 1b). Moreover, among the eight participants who had influenza virus detected by RT–PCR from without-mask aerosols, five were tested by viral culture and four were culture-positive. Among the six participants who had influenza virus detected by RT–PCR from with-mask aerosols, four were tested by viral culture and two were culture-positive. For rhinovirus, there were no significant differences between detection of virus with or without face masks, both in respiratory droplets and in aerosols (Table 1b). Conclusions were similar in comparisons of viral shedding (Table 1b). In addition, we found a significant reduction in viral shedding (Supplementary Table 2) in respiratory droplets for OC43 (Extended Data Fig. 4) and influenza B virus (Extended Data Fig. 5) and in aerosols for NL63 (Extended Data Fig. 4). We identified correlations between viral loads in different samples (Extended Data Figs. 6–8) and some evidence of declines in"
You say....
"Rely on yourself, not mandates or fallible humans."
I do that already and have thus far avoided it (I think), but I got sick as a dog for 6 weeks in Feb/Mar. I hope I had it.
To do that while everyone else is infringing on my social distance without masks means I would have to be wearing a freaking tyvek suit and gas mask.
How about we act like a community and do what is right for all of us. I know freedom lovers have a problem with this, but it should not last forever, and I am willing to make a compromise and have been doing so for 5 months.
If
EVERYONE was as responsible as I am, we could likely get back to something much more normal and much quicker. Instead idiots are running around without masks and without a care for themselves, their family or the community. Because of this idiocy, I say fuck it. Pass a law and make them take fines. It won't affect me in the slightest. It will affect idiots. If they cannot social distance (which they do not) and they cannot wear a mask (which they don't), fine their asses. Mass protests and no social distancing, disband them like they did church goers. The list goes on and on.
People say that Trump makes America look dumb. I say we are doing a better job than Trump.
Heck. I would like to go to a concert again. Maybe even a festival or two. That is not going to happen if we don't take some action.
"Our findings suggest that a homemade mask should only be considered as a last resort to prevent droplet transmission from infected individuals, but it would be better than no protection."
My point exactly. If a home made mask is a last resort then an N95 mask is first resort and what we all should be wearing when in close proximity of humans.
Anyone can yammer all they want about science, studies, etc. We still only have 6 mo. under our belt with COVID-19. Until we have a year or two, don't be an idiot. Wear a damned mask.
And about the others joking about people wearing them in their car.
If you are out and about shopping, running from store to store, in and out of the car. The best thing to do is to not touch your mask, your face, etc. Clean your hands in the car, but leave the mask on. Touching it, putting it down in your car, reusing it, etc all these increase your likelihood of infection if you came in contact with someone positive.
I wish it were as easy as having an N95 mask that was sterile each and every time I wear it, but I would run out quickly and have not seen a reasonable N95 mask in any of the stores i have been to.
I have seen quite a few people with respirators and a couple with gas masks. LOL. I wonder how many teenagers have pulled that to get underage booze, LOL.
