Since this all started I've read mask don't work, do work, might help, don't help, etc. Not long after all this started I read you needed at least a N95 mask. Now people are making them out of tee shirts. Like everything else with this virus it's hard to wade through all the BS. I just don't go anywhere I don't have to and stay the fuck away from others when I do. But that's what I've always done so things seem pretty normal to me.

Definitely masks help. It is un-fucking-deniable.

Here is a quote from the link that I responded to your first message.

" A society of about 24 million people, Taiwan has had only 449 confirmed cases of Covid-19 -- and seven deaths. "

Taiwan == Smart
American == dumbass

Dude with positive covid is about to sneeze on you. Safety goggles and mask are within your reach.

Do you grab them and put them on?

It is actually very simple. Your best bet is N95 mask as that will not let a bacteria or virus pass through if properly fit, which is tough. Anything else will impede large particles from flying directly into you nose and mount though.

A face shield might help, but they do not seal. Some form of glasses might work nearly as well.

Then there is the hygiene part. Wash, sanitize, etc, relentlessly.

I welcome the stores around here that have security and won't serve you if you do not have a mask. Every single one of them should do the same.

I have told a number of people in the past few weeks to back off, but usually I just bolt. Fucking idiots. 6' is too close for me these days.

Oh, and no, you can't go to a concert. No dining near each other, no parties more than 10 people.

BUT IT IS COMPLETELY FINE TO RIOT, LOOT AND DESTROY PERSONAL AND PUBLIC PROPERTY.

FFS, if I was running this lame as excuse of a country, CHOP/CHAZ would have been water cannoned the first day. Same with anyone destroying a historic monument or private business. Fucking pig fucking fuckers.

LOL

The science is out there for the people willing to do their own due diligence but the long and short of it is that the majority of people with a coronavirus don't give it off through respiratory exhalation or droplet and homemade masks don't work. Wearing a mask without understanding and implementing proper hygiene/safety protocols eliminates what little effectiveness they may have had.
Wash your dick skinners, don't touch your face (mucus membranes) and don't let mouth breathers get close are the only safety measures that are going to work........period. People have been conditioned to be so scared of other humans that they will jump into traffic to avoid passing another human on the sidewalk..............There is a reason for this and I bet it has nothing to do with a virus.

If that is true, point us at the science.

It's not. In fact some scientist are saying it is transmitted through aerosol now and can be for quite a while.

The amount of bad science out there is astonishing. Thus take every precaution you can.

My problem is the people taking NO PRECAUTIONS. I.e. most of our nationa and government and about 40% of the people around hear. Those people put me at risk. Just the other day at the grocery store, kids were coming up to the point of sale area, 1' from me MAX. I told them to go back to their fucking mommy or I would beat their ass.

I get your frustration because of your unique situation but you have to remember that your families health and security is up to you..no one else.
Coronavirus has always been able to be aerosolized, the questions are how much viral load is being presented and did you receive enough in that one chance encounter.....Also, it's not hanging in the air waiting to ambush you. When you combine the data with the majority of people having zero clue as to how to effectively use PPE you get no benefit.
Rely on yourself, not mandates or fallible humans.

" Among the samples collected without a face mask, we found that the majority of participants with influenza virus and coronavirus infection did not shed detectable virus in respiratory droplets or aerosols, "
" The major limitation of our study was the large proportion of participants with undetectable viral shedding in exhaled breath for each of the viruses studied. "

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24229526/
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that a homemade mask should only be considered as a last resort to prevent droplet transmission from infected individuals, but it would be better than no protection.
If this was MERS we'd be in "last resort" territory....we are not

It worse than h1n1, sees and mers. I traveled the world during that shit.

Of course it's my responsibility and I dont do the shit I do just for them. I do it for everyone and everyone should pay it back to me and be responsible if you are not be prepared for my reaction. I am still waiting for someone to touch me, can't promise what I wont do. Beyond twitchy with the millenial idiots.

About a dozen were lighting REAL fireworks on the 4th, some neighbors and I went down there, disrespectful fucks in the middle of the forest. My forest is toasty and it is hot. Stage 2 fire ban. We got their license plates and followed them home. Notified sheriff. I am glad we had a group to confrom them. Had I been alone, the outcome may not have been good for anyone.

How contagious was it?

You are using top end mers mortality. More like 30% ....lies, damn lies and stats.

Sure worse mortality but I dont hang around camels and the were 2 cases in USA.

Yes Covid has killed more than sars and mers combined. Mers only in a couple dozen countries.

Yep. covid is worse because you are much more likely to get it.

DoD would disagree with you, hence why they have run hard on a vaccine for MERS. If you don't have comorbidity the current coronavirus is the flu, MERS not so much.

It's all about what is dangerous to us. 2 cases is the USA is not much to worry about. I have pretty much zero confidence in the DoD or CDC so that doesnt help your argument with me. I am usually pretty behind them. Not in the past 6 months.

But what is worse to me are idiot Americans. All of these are flu. If you have the flu wear a damned mask you idiot.

I never though I would say that Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese are more hygienic than americans bit it looks like Americans are fucking filthy fucking asshole that want to spread disease.

Fuck we couldn't even put hand sanitizer on streets without it being looted or vandalized.

We can protest without masks but we cant go to church even with them. Fuck this.

Read part of it my my attention span now is lame, I will have a look tomorrow. Seems like the nature.com.

This stuck out though:
"We detected coronavirus in respiratory droplets and aerosols in 3 of 10 (30%) and 4 of 10 (40%) of the samples collected without face masks, respectively, but did not detect any virus in respiratory droplets or aerosols collected from participants wearing face masks, this difference was significant in aerosols and showed a trend toward reduced detection in respiratory droplets (Table 1b). For influenza virus, we detected virus in 6 of 23 (26%) and 8 of 23 (35%) of the respiratory droplet and aerosol samples collected without face masks, respectively. There was a significant reduction by wearing face masks to 1 of 27 (4%) in detection of influenza virus in respiratory droplets, but no significant reduction in detection in aerosols (Table 1b). Moreover, among the eight participants who had influenza virus detected by RT–PCR from without-mask aerosols, five were tested by viral culture and four were culture-positive. Among the six participants who had influenza virus detected by RT–PCR from with-mask aerosols, four were tested by viral culture and two were culture-positive. For rhinovirus, there were no significant differences between detection of virus with or without face masks, both in respiratory droplets and in aerosols (Table 1b). Conclusions were similar in comparisons of viral shedding (Table 1b). In addition, we found a significant reduction in viral shedding (Supplementary Table 2) in respiratory droplets for OC43 (Extended Data Fig. 4) and influenza B virus (Extended Data Fig. 5) and in aerosols for NL63 (Extended Data Fig. 4). We identified correlations between viral loads in different samples (Extended Data Figs. 68) and some evidence of declines in"

You say....
"Rely on yourself, not mandates or fallible humans."

I do that already and have thus far avoided it (I think), but I got sick as a dog for 6 weeks in Feb/Mar. I hope I had it.

To do that while everyone else is infringing on my social distance without masks means I would have to be wearing a freaking tyvek suit and gas mask.

How about we act like a community and do what is right for all of us. I know freedom lovers have a problem with this, but it should not last forever, and I am willing to make a compromise and have been doing so for 5 months.

If EVERYONE was as responsible as I am, we could likely get back to something much more normal and much quicker. Instead idiots are running around without masks and without a care for themselves, their family or the community. Because of this idiocy, I say fuck it. Pass a law and make them take fines. It won't affect me in the slightest. It will affect idiots. If they cannot social distance (which they do not) and they cannot wear a mask (which they don't), fine their asses. Mass protests and no social distancing, disband them like they did church goers. The list goes on and on.

People say that Trump makes America look dumb. I say we are doing a better job than Trump.

Heck. I would like to go to a concert again. Maybe even a festival or two. That is not going to happen if we don't take some action.

"Our findings suggest that a homemade mask should only be considered as a last resort to prevent droplet transmission from infected individuals, but it would be better than no protection."

My point exactly. If a home made mask is a last resort then an N95 mask is first resort and what we all should be wearing when in close proximity of humans.

Anyone can yammer all they want about science, studies, etc. We still only have 6 mo. under our belt with COVID-19. Until we have a year or two, don't be an idiot. Wear a damned mask.

And about the others joking about people wearing them in their car.

If you are out and about shopping, running from store to store, in and out of the car. The best thing to do is to not touch your mask, your face, etc. Clean your hands in the car, but leave the mask on. Touching it, putting it down in your car, reusing it, etc all these increase your likelihood of infection if you came in contact with someone positive.

I wish it were as easy as having an N95 mask that was sterile each and every time I wear it, but I would run out quickly and have not seen a reasonable N95 mask in any of the stores i have been to.

I have seen quite a few people with respirators and a couple with gas masks. LOL. I wonder how many teenagers have pulled that to get underage booze, LOL.

I shaved today for the first time in 8 weeks. Did a #2 on the hair and #1 on the sides. Considering #1 on whole head tomorrow.

Got about 2 more hours work on the Disco before I feel comfortable taking it out for a couple weeks. Slightly worried about soft brakes, just did pads, maybe I need to bleed them.

No one mandates a mask hiking or bikiing. But if you are biking on a path in an urban area amongst the hoards that I have seen you'd be an idiot not to. FFS, all it takes is a huge sneeze of someone ahead of you and you will drive right through their cloud.
Not my problem although agree with your comment. And just adds to being thankful living in rural PA and not really worrying about the whole thing.

Know what you mean. The D1 brakes have always been soft especially compared to the RRC which has the best pedal feel / brakes of any of my vehicles.
It's because you have the abs pump making a shit ton of pressure. Bri, was it hard to push your calipers back in when you replaced the brake pads?

In terms of the overall economic and societal impact, it is observably much worse.
Sure, but that was self imposed and hindsight is 20/20. We could have actually protected our elderly population and people with comorbidity since we obviously knew from what happened in Italy and other places what was going to occur.

I pretty much agree with everything except to say that if you want to accept that homemade masks should be used on the infinitesimally small chance they "may" work then we should also stop driving and no longer have any form of interstate commerce. This will almost guarantee that the 22,000+ people that will die in California from transportation related pollution (every year) will now live. The nationwide total is 200,000+ every year..............but let's not inconvenience anyone.

So where did our system break down? What went wrong? At what level do we asign blame?
